About The Position

The Vocational Specialist is responsible for developing, leading, instructing and motivating youth in the areas of vocational trades and life skills. The Vocational Specialist oversees activities that lead to development of skills as well as healthy choice of leisure activities such as animal care, woodworking, making crafts, and life skills such as budgeting and money management. At Hillside, we believe that healthy youth and strong families with opportunities to succeed are the foundation of any thriving community. From locations across Central & Western New York and Prince George’s County, Maryland, our programs serve nearly 10,000 youth, adults, and families each year. Partnering with families and communities, we deliver high-quality, evidence-based services, in the appropriate settings — whether on residential campuses or in schools, homes, or the workplace. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with youth in residential, educational or recreation/ vocation setting required
  • CPR certification required or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Unrestricted, valid NYS driver’s license for minimum of 1 year with a clean driving record and minimum insurance coverage that meets agency standards.
  • Knowledge of the importance of vocational and life skills development in the adolescent population.
  • Ability to administer the life skills assessment used by the program (e.g. Casey Life Skills) and ability to share results with the interdisciplinary treatment team including family members.
  • Ability to support youth development in the areas of application submission and interviewing skills.
  • Time management skills to balance caseloads and meet program goals and deadlines.
  • Demonstrating the Hillside Professional Competencies of Communicates Effectively, Personal Excellence, Cultural Competence, Builds and Leverages Relationships and Optimizes Decision Making

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that youth have activities that are fun, challenging and educational.
  • Utilize a relationship-based approach to engage youth in vocational and recreational activities with which they may be unfamiliar to support developing competencies.
  • Complete a required life skills assessment for each youth such as the Casey Life Skills and provide results to the treatment team upon youth admission to the program.
  • Support the 4H Coordinator with 4H projects.
  • Assist staff with care of the animals as needed.
  • Teach youth responsible and safe handling of basic tools.
  • Complete paperwork as designated by agency and funders.
  • Manage projects from planning through execution.
  • Assist youth with their application for the campus Apprenticeship Program and/or employment in the community.
  • Assist youth with developing a skills profile that they will take with them upon discharge.
