About The Position

The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program operates on the campus of Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee and at Sunland in Marianna under the auspices of The State of Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program (DDDP) is dedicated to empowering people with developmental disabilities charged with a felony crime to: 1. Acquire the skills and support that will prepare them for success in their future environments. 2. Acquire the skills needed to become competent to stand trial. The incumbent assigned to this position is responsible for the supervision, work assignments, custody, personal care, safety, and security of APD forensic residents assigned to the Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program. This is a skilled position requiring the incumbent to supervise residents in the work program by instructing residents in a variety of vocational skills at DDDP to include general maintenance, environmental or housekeeping skills, groundskeeping, etc. This position serves as the lead Instructor in the absence of Department Supervisor and completes time-studies as needed per Department of Labor. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following tasks: DDDP is a forensic facility working with individuals with disabilities in a secure setting.  These individuals have been adjudicated by the courts as incompetent to proceed to trial and have significant behavioral and psychiatric issues.  DDDP provides rehabilitative, vocational, and daily living skills training to the individuals served which allows for a smooth transition back into a non-secure residential or community setting.   Pathways is a 34-bed all male forensic facility working with individuals with disabilities in a secure setting.  These individuals have been adjudicated by the courts as incompetent to proceed to trial and have significant behavioral and psychiatric issues.  Pathways provides rehabilitative, vocational, and daily living skills training to the individuals served which allows for a smooth transition back into a non-secure residential or community setting.

Requirements

Knowledge of the principles and practices of one of the allied health field disciplines or one of the rehabilitative sciences.
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communication.
Knowledge of a skilled vocation such as general maintenance.
Ability to work safely and proficiently in performing all duties.
Ability to follow written and oral instruction,
Ability to walk, climb, reach, stoop, bend lift and carry.
Ability to communicate on a two-way radio.
Ability to work in a training capacity with people in individual and group settings.
Ability to collect, record and evaluate data relating to the training of individuals.
Ability to prepare and maintain records and other instructional materials.

A high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of experience in the occupational area being taught, as defined by the employing agency.
College education from an accredited institution or vocational/technical training in the occupational area being taught, as defined by the employing agency, can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience.
Valid driver’s license.
Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
Certification in the agency approved crisis prevention and intervention program at the Advanced level is required unless the incumbent requests reasonable accommodation supported by an annual medical certification.
Incumbent is required to submit to pre-employment TB screening and on an annual on-going basis as prescribed by DDDP.
Maintain confidentiality of employee and/or resident information.
Based on the duties and essential functions of this position, incumbents will be required to spend a minimum of 75% of work time performing duties which involves direct contact with residents in a secure forensic facility.
This position requires lifting, pulling and squatting.

Responsibilities

Supervises APD/DDDP Work Program residents by teaching occupational skills and performing various utility functions such as painting, grounds cleanup, pressure washing, moving furniture/property, and assisting with special projects as needed.
Teaches skills appropriate to the occupation which involves OSHA health, safety, and environmental standards and appropriate skills to the vocational area being performed.
Ensures that methods for maintenance are effective, efficient, and economical for the needs of DDDP.
Completes and collects time study data on residents prior to employment and as needed per Wage and Hour/Department of Labor standards for Developmentally Disabled residents making less than minimum wage.
Serves as the lead instructor in the absence of department supervisor.
Schedules CCIR training as needed and collects paper timesheets of residents for supervisor approval and input on People First.
Responsible for tracking inventory needs monthly to provide to department supervisor for ordering.
Maintains discipline in the workplace by teaching appropriate behavior in occupation in safety, health, and social skills to residents.
Ensures safety and prepares reports on vocational work program progress as required by APD based on resident progress or disciplinary reports if needed.
Completes all required training. MANDT training is required.
Maintains own timesheet, ensuring accuracy and submit timely to People First in accordance with police and procedure.
Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
