About The Position

This position will be working as a member of the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center (BBVC) team in the Chugach National Forest in South Central Alaska. BBVC staff provide high quality interpretive programs to the public as they embark on their trip of a lifetime to Alaska. BBVC staff engage with the public by staffing the visitor center, providing guided hikes, interpretive programs, and campfire programs.

  • Enjoys working outdoors in a variety of settings and weather conditions
  • Driver’s license and safe driving record

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service while working in the BBVC, answering questions, and providing general information about recreation opportunities throughout the Chugach National Forest and surrounding area.
  • Develop and provide formal interpretive programs such as guided hikes and campfire programs in Portage Valley. Interpretive programs will range in time from short programs of 15-60 minutes, informal roving programs, and can cover a wide range of content. (Training and coaching provided)
  • Develop interpretive resources such as self-led activities, visitor center activity stations, and printed materials.
  • Provide visitors with effective instructions on security and safety procedures and inform the supervisor of visitor needs.
  • Participate in environmental education opportunities such as field trips and off-site programs in schools and events
  • Develop social media content for public engagement. Work with the public affairs unit to ensure that current and accurate information is available on the external Forest Service website and other information portals.
  • Assist with administrative and clerical tasks regularly, such as inputting timesheets, tracking statistics and data entry.
  • Perform daily upkeep activities associated with the BBVC facility.
