The purpose of this academic observership is to provide an internationally trained dermatologist with structured exposure to adult and pediatric dermatologic practice within a U.S. academic medical center, specifically the Department of Dermatology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. This observership is intended to support the observer’s professional development through observation of clinical care, academic teaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration, while maintaining full compliance with institutional, regulatory, and patient safety standards. This observership supports the academic mission of UAMS by fostering international professional exchange, promoting global perspectives in dermatology, and strengthening pathways for future education, research collaboration, and workforce development. It allows the selected internationally trained dermatologist to contextualize prior training within the U.S. healthcare environment while preserving patient safety and regulatory compliance. The observership is educational and observational in nature only. It does not constitute clinical employment, hands-on patient care, or supervised practice, and it confers no clinical privileges. The observership is designed to: Familiarize the observer with adult and pediatric dermatologic practice in the U.S. healthcare system, including clinic structure, patient flow, and multidisciplinary coordination of care. Provide exposure to evidence-based clinical decision-making and U.S. standards of dermatologic care. Enhance understanding of academic dermatology, including resident education, case-based learning, and scholarly activities. Promote professional development in areas such as clinical documentation standards, patient communication norms, quality metrics, and ethical/regulatory frameworks.

Requirements

  • Medical degree (MD, MBBS, or equivalent) from an accredited international medical school
  • Completion of formal postgraduate training in dermatology (residency or equivalent) outside the United States

Responsibilities

  • Observe outpatient adult and pediatric dermatology clinics, including general dermatology and subspecialty clinics, as permitted.
  • Observe adult and pediatric dermatology consultations on hospitalized patients, as permitted.
  • Attend educational conferences, grand rounds, journal clubs, and teaching sessions when available.
  • Observe dermatologic procedures and diagnostic processes (e.g. biopsy review, clinicopathologic correlation), without participation.
  • Engage in informal academic discussion with faculty and trainees regarding clinical reasoning, disease management, and U.S. practice patterns.
  • Review de-identified educational materials for learning purposes, in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Participate in research projects as available.
  • Comply with all UAMS institutional policies, including HIPAA, patient privacy, and confidentiality agreements.
  • Acknowledge and adhere to the non-clinical, observational nature of the role at all times.
  • Complete any required onboarding, training, or compliance documentation prior to the start date of the observership.
  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with academic medical center standards
