About The Position

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor beginning August 2026. Appointments are based on exceptional teaching and research in abstract algebra and/or combinatorics. This is a 9-month appointment with an initial 1-year terminal contract, which, pending satisfactory performance, can be reissued annually for a total of three years. The Department of Mathematical Sciences supports a vibrant, collegial, and inclusive community of teachers, scholars, and students, offering bachelor’s degrees in mathematics, statistics, data science, applied mathematics & computer science, and actuarial science, as well as Master’s and Doctoral degrees in mathematics. The department plays a central role in fulfilling UWM’s mission of high-quality education and research, serving a broad population of students across STEM, business, education, and interdisciplinary programs. Requirements

  • Applicants must already be in possession of a PhD degree or obtain their PhD by August 24, 2026.
  • Research background in abstract algebra and/or combinatorics.

Responsibilities

  • Make meaningful contributions to the department’s undergraduate teaching mission by teaching lower-division courses each semester and, when needed, selected upper-division or graduate courses at the discretion of the department chair.
  • Teach a 2–3 load in the first year (typically 6 credits in one semester and 9 in the other), followed by a 3–3 load in subsequent years (typically 9 credits per semester).
  • Pursue an active research program with the support of a departmental research mentor.
  • Participate in departmental service activities that support undergraduate education.
