About The Position

A state-level public sector organization is seeking a Virtualization Administrator to provide day-to-day support and strategic guidance for its VMware and Hyper-V environments. The organization is currently operating on vSphere 7 and is planning for future upgrades. This engagement includes a comprehensive analysis of the current virtualization environment, assessment of configuration and system health, and recommendations for structural improvements and future upgrades. The role combines operational support, performance tuning, capacity planning, upgrade planning, and documentation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of VMware and Hyper-V systems administration experience
  • Strong vSphere administration experience (including storage migrations, vMotion, P2V)
  • Experience with capacity planning and performance analysis tools
  • Basic Unix/Linux knowledge
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proactive problem-solving mindset

Responsibilities

  • Manage VMware Infrastructure/vSphere and Hyper-V clusters in Production and Test/Development environments
  • Build, test, deploy, and maintain virtual machines
  • Support VMware Horizon environment as needed
  • Monitor system health and proactively detect issues
  • Apply security patches and ESXi updates
  • Perform storage migrations, vMotion, and P2V migrations
  • Evaluate VM configurations for optimal performance and resource utilization
  • Provide occasional after-hours support as required
  • Participate in infrastructure capacity planning
  • Provide resource provisioning tools and procedures
  • Analyze and recommend improvements to the current virtualization environment
  • Propose and evaluate VM provisioning solutions
  • Develop structural and architectural recommendations for future virtualization upgrades
  • Upgrade legacy vSphere environments as required
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and operating procedures
  • Update system and user documentation following enhancements or fixes
  • Develop documentation for new functionality
  • Conduct knowledge transfer sessions for internal staff
  • Provide guidance on best practices for VMware, Hyper-V, and Linux environments
  • Perform minor system improvements (historically up to six per year)
  • Provide cost estimates and implementation documentation for approved enhancements
  • Deliver required documentation upon completion
  • Provide comprehensive administration of VMware and Hyper-V environments
  • Conduct full analysis of current virtualization infrastructure
  • Clean and organize existing environment
  • Provide future-state upgrade and design recommendations
  • Ensure system stability, performance optimization, and documentation compliance
  • Deliver daily, weekly, and monthly system health checks
  • Deliver weekly documentation updates reflecting enhancements or fixes
  • Deliver status reports detailing tasks completed and issue resolutions
  • Deliver accepted technical documentation
  • Deliver knowledge transfer confirmation from staff
  • Receive satisfactory feedback from technical staff and management
