About The Position

The Virginia Department of Health, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), Division of Death Prevention, located in Richmond, VA, is seeking a full-time Violent Death Epidemiologist. The mid-level epidemiologist is responsible for carrying out a broad and moderately complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities in an assigned district, region, or within a statewide program area. Responsibilities include conducting epidemiologic investigations and/or assessments, participating in surveillance activities, conducting epidemiologic studies to include data analysis and dissemination, and consulting on scientific and technical issues. Positions in this role may coordinate a specific epidemiology program within the assigned area to include interpreting program policies and procedures, training staff, monitoring and reviewing data collection/analysis for accuracy and consistency, and serving as a program consultant. Positions in this role work under the limited supervision of a lead epidemiologist, program manager, or similar position and perform assignments independently, making determinations about scope and direction of program planning, research, and investigation, based on agreed-upon direction and institutional review board approval, as needed. Typically, the work completed is reviewed for feasibility, conformance to program policy and practices, and effectiveness in meeting specific goals and objectives. This is a restricted position, solely funded by the Centers for Disease Control, with a period ending 08/31/2029. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds. Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of communicable and other conditions of public health importance.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods of public health surveillance and disease outbreak investigations.
  • Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies regarding the reporting and control of disease.
  • Working knowledge of biostatistics, computer data analysis, and data management techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop program goals and objectives and to evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, quality assure, analyze, and present statistical data.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with health care professionals and the general public.
  • Experience in epidemiology, public health, or a related area.

Nice To Haves

  • Training/experience in public health, epidemiology, or biostatistics or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others either in a supervisory or project management capacity.
  • Basic knowledge of statistical software packages.
