About The Position

This position provides criminal justice system, case status, restitution process and related information to victims and witnesses in a variety of criminal situations; monitors cases through the judicial system; performs a variety of data entry and office support functions. This is a non-exempt, part-time position, not to exceed 1,039 work hours in any fiscal year. Must be able to work 10-20 hours per calendar week, preferably in the mornings. Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone, often where relations may be confrontational or strained. Data entry and verification procedures. Record keeping principles and practices. Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. Legal terminology, principles, proceedings and practices preferred.
  • Skill in: Organizing work and having exceptional attention to detail. Interpreting, applying and explaining applicable codes and regulations. Analyzing a variety of legal documents, files and records. Reading and following instructions and policies as set by the District Attorney. Dealing successfully with the public, in person and over the telephone, often where relations may be confrontational or strained. Assisting victims or witnesses of crimes with progression through the criminal justice system in a timely and reasonable manner. Operating a variety of office equipment, including personal computers, facsimile machines, photocopiers and scanners. Maintaining accurate records and files; preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED AND one (1) year of general clerical or administrative experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one (1) year professional experience working in a legal office primarily practicing in criminal law or in a criminal justice agency preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with District Attorney's Office staff and staff from other agencies to obtain needed documents and information.
  • Enters and retrieves information from automated data management systems.
  • Tracks documents and updates records.
  • Review all work for accuracy and completeness and maintain the confidentiality of all information.
  • Provides customer service support as needed, including answering questions from the general public in person and on the telephone.
  • Provides information on the criminal justice system, restitution policies, the court system and case status to victims and witnesses of crime in person or over the telephone.
  • Provides crisis intervention to victims and witnesses of crimes to assist in reducing trauma and facilitate adjustment; provides advice and referral on a short-term and follow-up basis.
  • Assists victims and witnesses in various processes of the criminal justice system, such as completing forms, ensuring property return, and arranging meetings with prosecuting attorneys.
  • Operates standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work, and may operate a motor vehicle to attend meetings or transport victims or witnesses.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with clients, public, and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Notifies victims of the defendant's court appearances, outcome, legal status, and release date. Attends court hearings and legal proceedings as needed.
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the Carson City District Attorney's Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records and restricted information.
