About The Position

New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) provides civil legal services to low-income New Mexicans for a variety of legal issues including domestic violence/family law, consumer protection, housing, and benefits. NMLA has locations throughout the state including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Gallup, Roswell, Silver City, Las Vegas, Taos, and Santa Ana Pueblo. NMLA is seeking a Managing Attorney for its Victim's Services practices. This position will manage a variety of statewide and local programs that provide legal services to victims of domestic violence, stalking, human trafficking, and sexual assault as well as victims of crime as enumerated by the NM Crime Victim's Act and federal law. This position is located in our Albuquerque office. The Victim's Services Managing Attorney will report to the Litigation Director and work closely with the Las Cruces Victim's Services Managing Attorney, as well as the Grants Director to build up existing programs and to make sure all grant-funded deliverables are met. This includes contributing to preparation of grant proposals and writing grant reports. Job Summary: The Victim's Services manager will perform and oversee outreach and build collaborative relationships with law enforcement, prosecutors, health professionals and other service providers where victims often seek services.

Requirements

  • J.D Degree
  • Three (3) years' experience as an attorney
  • NM Bar Membership within six (6) months of hire
  • Sensitivity to and ability to work with low-income clients
  • Knowledge of or experience in poverty law issues
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Must be able to effectively use computer technology and remote communications systems, including shared on-line workspaces and web meeting and videoconferencing software, to effectively collaborate and co-counsel with staff located in multiple offices.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Demonstrates the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with clients, administrative and governmental agencies, and program staff
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, manage a caseload and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the preparation of grant proposals and grant reports;
  • Performs and oversees outreach;
  • Supervises and mentors attorneys, paralegals, and other staff and volunteers;
  • Performs administrative duties and working in close collaboration with other members of NMLA's management team;
  • Carries a caseload as sole counsel or co-counsel for low-income individuals and families in the areas of Victim's Services, including: victim survivors of domestic violence; sexual assault (intimate and non-intimate partner); stalking; human trafficking; victims of crime as enumerated by state and federal law; and victim survivors of other forms of interpersonal violence;
  • Develops and implements a program of regular contact with governmental agencies and other appropriate community organizations in the communities served by the office. This may include, but is not limited to, implementing a program of regular community education in the area.
  • Engages in local bar and community activities;
  • Keeping track of records and office systems in the NMLA area network and client database. This includes, but is not limited to, review of client intake forms, records of case assignment, transfer memos, case filing system, and brief banks;
  • Holding office meetings on a regular basis to ensure that all full-time and permanent part-time employees are fully informed of expected workload, important case activities, and general program concerns.
  • Following procedures stated in the CBA and other NMLA manuals with regard to the evaluation of personnel in the office; the granting or denial of requests to take leave or to participate in training and similar matters.
  • Monitoring the job performance of other employees in the office; notifies Litigation Director and Executive Director as soon as practicable if problems develop which cannot be resolved informally within the office.
  • Conducting group and individual case staffings on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
  • Reviewing all cases upon closing and monitoring compliance with the Case Assembly Protocol.
  • Coordinates and communicates regularly with attorneys within his or her office to ensure that program policies, procedures, and requirements are met, including to ensure that legal services are provided in accordance with the LSC regulations and restrictions and NMLA Board policies;
  • Conducts evaluations of all staff under his or her supervision;
  • Assists the Executive Director and Litigation Director in making management decisions within his/her office or department, including hiring, firing, job performance, staff evaluations, case reviews and resolving disputes;
  • Has read and understands all policies and procedures required by the CBA, the CSR Handbook, and the Board of Directors of NMLA.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Litigation and/or Executive Director
