About The Position

The Vice President, Pharmacy will lead enterprise-wide pharmacy strategy, service line growth and innovation, regulatory compliance, and quality outcomes. The position will oversee a broad scope of operations totaling approximately $1B in revenue, including inpatient and outpatient services, 340B, and specialty pharmacy. The department manages approximately 9.3 million doses dispensed annually and $760 million in drug purchasing. Under the general direction of the Senior Vice President at Stanford Health Care, with dotted‑line reporting to the Vice President of Operations at SHC – Tri‑Valley, the VP Pharmacy serves as the enterprise executive leader accountable for the strategic, clinical, financial, and operational performance of Pharmacy services across Stanford Health Care and SHC – Tri‑Valley. The VP Pharmacy is a key member of the Stanford Health Care senior leadership team and is responsible for developing and executing the enterprise pharmacy strategy, including creation of a multi‑year strategic plan, SWOT analysis, and a unified scope of practice for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy assistants. The role partners with senior leaders to advance system‑wide strategic priorities, service line growth, and innovation across the enterprise. The position is accountable for enterprise‑wide medication safety, regulatory compliance, and quality outcomes, ensuring adherence to California Board of Pharmacy requirements, accreditation standards, and state and federal regulations. The VP Pharmacy leads the design and execution of quality and safety initiatives aligned with top‑tier academic medical center benchmarks. Success in this role is demonstrated through measurable enterprise outcomes, including achievement of pharmacy quality and safety targets; effective execution of the enterprise pharmacy strategic plan; responsible pharmaceutical cost and expense management; integration and alignment of pharmacy operations across Stanford Health Care and SHC – Tri‑Valley; and development of high‑performing pharmacy leadership teams.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) required
  • Post PharmD residency in Pharmacy or hospital administration required
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in health care system management with a proven record of accomplishments in operations, program development and related planning required.
  • Significant proven healthcare management experience with demonstrated leadership in strategic/ business planning, program development, project management, process improvement and physician relations required.
  • Strategic & Financial Leadership: Expert knowledge of pharmacy operations, business development, fiscal stewardship, and enterprise resource management.
  • Clinical, Quality & Regulatory Expertise: Extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical protocols, quality monitoring, and state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Executive Leadership & Influence: Exceptional leadership, change‑management, negotiation, and executive communication skills.
  • Systems Thinking & Innovation: Visionary analytical abilities and advanced knowledge of information technology supporting pharmacy operations.
  • CA-RPH (Register Pharmacist) required

Responsibilities

  • Provide enterprise executive leadership for Pharmacy operations in alignment with Stanford Health Care and SHC – Tri‑Valley strategic goals.
  • Lead system‑level strategic and operational decision‑making to optimize clinical quality, operational efficiency, and financial performance.
  • Ensure enterprise compliance with all regulatory, licensing, and accreditation requirements.
  • Serve as an executive consultant and strategic partner to Stanford Medicine entities on pharmacy‑related initiatives.
  • Develop, mentor, and lead pharmacy executive and management teams within a highly matrixed organization.
