About The Position

We are seeking a Vice President of Marketing and Communication to join our Durham, NC Team! What You'll Do: The Vice President (VP) serves as Team Leader and oversees the planning, coordination and implementation of strategic communications and marketing programs to increase awareness and support for Self-Help’s work among internal and external audiences. Reporting to the Executive Vice President, the VP supervises four directors and a high performing national team that provides the full range of communication services, including, but not limited to, brand development and management, public and media relations, internal communications, digital marketing, traditional print projects, sales promotions and collateral, social media, corporate website and intranet, content creation, copywriting, special events and marketing reporting and analysis. Lead and execute organization-wide marketing and communications strategies that support business objectives, brand growth, and member engagement. Serve as a strategic partner to senior leaders and cross-functional teams, providing counsel on marketing, communications, and reputation management. Build, protect, and evolve Self-Help’s brand through consistent, compelling messaging across all channels. Oversee public relations, media relations, crisis communications, and reputation management, including proactive and reactive strategies. Direct multi-channel marketing campaigns (digital and traditional) for multiple lines of business; measure performance, manage budgets, and optimize results. Lead digital strategy, including public websites and social media, to increase awareness, traffic, and engagement. Oversee internal communications to strengthen employee engagement, alignment, and trust. Ensure marketing and communications activities comply with applicable laws and regulations. Stay current on trends in marketing, communications, and financial services. Act as a change agent by supporting economic inclusion through diverse supplier and vendor partnerships. Perform other duties as needed to support organizational goals. Maintain and enforce brand standards across all platforms and materials. Partner with external-facing teams to ensure alignment of brand, voice, and messaging. Engage members and audiences through customer-driven communications informed by feedback and insights. Build, coach, and lead a high-performing marketing and communications team. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and results-driven team culture. Manage annual marketing budgets, vendors, agencies, and contracts to ensure cost-effective outcomes. Provide leadership on marketing automation and use of external partners.

Requirements

  • BA/BS or equivalent experience in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Economics, Business or related area.
  • 15+ years of additional experience in marketing, public relations and program leadership with a proven track record of success in managing a range of marketing and communications functions such as brand management, customer marketing, digital marketing, creative services, public relations and engagement, and other external communications.
  • This includes 8+ years developing and leading high-performance, cross-functional teams, with recent (past three years) responsibility for direct reports.
  • Demonstrated experience elevating the marketing and communications function from a tactical, fulfillment role to that of a valued, strategic partner.
  • Hands on experience with CRM and SEO tools like Google Analytics, Salesforce, etc.
  • Experience with remote reporting relationships.
  • Excellent face-to-face, written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Strong communicator and motivator with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of people including team members, colleagues, board members, and other parties.
  • Thorough understanding of research and communications messaging.
  • Ability to effectively run a multi-faceted, dynamic marketing department of a mid- to large-size financial institution.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate the achievement of goals, objectives, and work plans.
  • Clear understanding of systemic inequality and how it relates to Self-Help’s work.
  • Strong understanding of the marketing continuum and experience in multiple aspects of digital, retail and traditional marketing, including data and social media best practices.
  • Excellent leadership skills with a proven ability to lead, motivate, and supervise employees, as well as step in as a working manager with a hands-on approach.
  • Good judgement with the ability to navigate complexity, change and nuance.
  • Excellent creative ability, and exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong public relations knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective audiences.
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets, balance multiple priorities, meet tight timelines and work effectively.
  • Experience managing third-party vendor and agency relationships.
