About The Position

Emory Valley Center is a grass-roots, mission-driven nonprofit that has supported children, adults, and families with disabilities in our community for more than 70 years. We are seeking a Vice President of Finance to join our leadership team as a strategic leader and trusted partner to the President, the Executive Team, and the Board, and a hands-on steward of our financial health, technology, and payroll operations. Why this role matters As Vice President of Finance, you will: Own the full picture of EVC’s financial health—from daily accounting to long-range strategy. Serve as a key voice at the leadership table, helping shape decisions that directly impact the people we serve. Lead a small but mighty team and work across teams to make finance, IT, and payroll real service partners to programs Champion a culture grounded in compassion, forward thinking, quality, value, accountability, and inclusion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field (MBA Preferred).
  • CPA required.
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience leading multi-functional teams (e.g., finance, IT, payroll) within a total of 10+ years of progressive financial management experience.
  • Nonprofit, healthcare, or social services experience strongly preferred
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP, financial regulations, internal controls, audits, and grant compliance.
  • Demonstrated success leading budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting for a complex organization.
  • Experience working closely with executive leadership and Boards, including presenting clear, actionable financial information.
  • Strong, approachable leadership style—able to motivate, coach, and inspire staff while holding teams accountable for results.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; high emotional intelligence and professionalism in handling sensitive information.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and financial/HRIS systems (Paylocity and Sage); comfort evaluating and implementing IT solutions.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to juggle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid Tennessee driver’s license with a good driving record and ability to travel between sites as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all financial operations, including general accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and internal controls.
  • Prepare timely, accurate financial statements and reports for the President, Executive Team, Board of Directors, funders, and other stakeholders.
  • Lead the annual budget process; partner with department heads to align resources with strategic goals and program needs.
  • Monitor financial performance, identify trends and opportunities, and recommend actions to improve results and manage risk.
  • Manage external audits, HUD fiscal records, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including grant and federal award requirements.
  • Oversee financial management of grants—budgeting, tracking, and reporting in close collaboration with program leaders.
  • Direct IT activities to ensure systems are secure, reliable, and support data-driven decision-making; evaluate and implement technology that improves efficiency and reporting.
  • Oversee payroll operations and retirement plan compliance, working closely with HR and third-party administrators (including ERISA testing, and annual audits).
  • Develop, implement, and regularly update financial and operational policies that promote transparency, accountability, and strong internal controls.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Finance team; set clear expectations, coach for growth, and foster a positive, performance-focused culture.
  • Champion EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) across programs and conduct regular location visits to stay connected to staff and operations.
  • Exercise signature authority for operating and personal accounts; coordinate corporate credit card invoicing and major purchases with the President.
