Indiana University Health is seeking individuals who embody these values to join our Community Medicine and Human Resources leadership teams in the role of Vice President – Medical Director, Health & Wellness. The Vice President - Medical Director, Health & Wellness serves as the clinical leader for employee health, advancing an integrated strategy that improves workforce well-being, health outcomes, and value. This leader provides clinical expertise, quality oversight, and population-health guidance to ensure evidence-based, equitable, and accessible care for team members and their families. The Medical Director partners closely with human resources operational leadership in a dyad model, collaborates with the IU Health physician enterprise, and assesses vendor and benefit clinical program performance. Acting as the trusted clinical voice for employee health, the Medical Director helps shape benefit design, champion prevention and mental health, strengthen care navigation, and cultivate a culture of health across the organization. This incumbent leads the development of care models designed to improve the health of an employee population, to be scalable and positioned for external employers to engage IU Health in delivering services. Reports to : SVP – Community Medicine with a dotted line to VP – Health and Wellness Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) : This position combines a 0.75 FTE focused on delivering internal and external employee health strategies, with a 0.25 FTE clinical appointment.

Requirements

  • Must maintain active status as Medical Staff of the organization.
  • Must maintain full-time faculty appointment with the Indiana University School of Medicine.
  • 10+ years in health care administration with progressive levels of responsibility.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across all organizational levels and external partners.
  • Ability to handle sensitive physician and organizational matters with tact and confidentiality.
  • Desire to lead through the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical & Quality Strategy Drive increased quality of care and decrease costs for employee plan members.
  • Provide expert guidance on clinical standards, quality benchmarks, best practices, and evidence-based care delivery models.
  • Lead quality and population-health improvement initiatives, including performance on the Team Member Health Index (AQI) and other key health outcome measures.
  • Collaborate on benefit plan design and clinical program development; engage in clinical peer reviews as needed to ensure high-quality, appropriate care.
  • Champion team member health & prevention; co-lead strategy that integrates occupational health, mental health, and preventive health.
  • Advance mental-health & behavioral health strategy; champion stigma-free mental health culture.
  • Collaborate with care management; advise on clinical pathways and navigation support to support high-risk & high-need populations.
  • Collaborate with dyad partner, benefit consultant, and TPA and PBM on high-cost trends.
  • Collaborate with third-party peers on individual care authorizations, as appropriate, to ensure appropriate, timely, and compliant care decisions for covered individuals.
  • Governance Serve as the clinical lead and dyad partner with operations in key governance and oversight functions (e.g., monthly business reviews, steering committees, performance reviews).
  • Advise on clinical performance of health plan, PBM, EAP, wellness, and digital health.
  • Support the development, interpretation, and communication of clinical data, dashboards, and analytics to drive insights and decision-making.
  • Design, implement, and operate scalable service offerings for external employers.
  • Partner with operational dyad to identify priority areas, set improvement goals, and align tactics to enhance health outcomes and value.
  • Collaborate with care management and vendor partners to support navigation, disease/condition management programs, and targeted clinical interventions.
  • Act as a clinical advisor to Benefits, the Employee Assistance Program, and Wellness teams, ensuring integrated, employee-centered clinical strategies across programs.
  • Provide occupational medicine expertise, including oversight of a rapid referral network to facilitate timely access to appropriate care.
  • Serve as the primary clinical liaison to the IUH physician enterprise, building strong relationships to support employee health and care coordination.
  • Gain alignment with internal clinical leaders on strategic initiatives aimed at improving workforce health and well-being (e.g. Healthiest Workforce, Project Prevention, EOHS initiatives, etc.).
  • Clinical spokesperson for employee-health topics, fostering trust, transparency, and health literacy across the organization.
  • Serve as a key clinical partner to external organizations (e.g., the Regenstrief Institute), collaborating to advance data-driven research, population health insights, and evidence-based care initiatives aligned with organization strategy.
  • Operations Design, implement, and operate scalable service offerings for external employers.
  • Partner with operational dyad to identify priority areas, set improvement goals, and align tactics to enhance health outcomes and value.
