VP Business Development, MemorialCare

MemorialCare Health SystemFountain Valley, CA
62d

About The Position

The Vice President, Business Development, is the chief architect of external growth and is responsible for identifying, structuring, and executing strategic initiatives that expand MemorialCare's reach, revenue, and relevance across all markets. Reporting directly to the Chief Strategy Officer, this executive leads the system's market-facing growth engine, overseeing the full lifecycle of business development: from opportunity identification and financial modeling to negotiation, deal execution, and post-close performance. This role serves as the primary system-facing executive for all major external relationships, transactions, and partnerships including joint ventures, new lines of business, and strategic affiliations with physician groups, third-party operators, and other potential partners. The VP is accountable for both inorganic and organic growth across hospital inpatient services and the expanding ambulatory network, ensuring every initiative aligns with the system's strategic priorities and delivers measurable impact. Critically, this leader works in close collaboration with the VPs of Strategy and Growth across campuses and medical foundation to ensure business development efforts are informed by local service line needs, physician capacity, and geographic priorities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10-12 years of executive experience in business development, corporate development, or healthcare investment banking, with a significant track record of negotiating and closing complex transactions within a health system setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree (MBA, JD, or MHA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Growth Execution: Lead the MemorialCare's external growth strategy by identifying and pursuing new revenue-generating opportunities across hospital and ambulatory settings. This includes launching new service lines, expanding into new geographies, and developing consumer-facing offerings. Unlike the VP of Strategy, who focuses on internal planning and prioritization, this role is accountable for executing market-facing initiatives that directly impact system growth.
  • Pipeline Ownership: Manage the full lifecycle of business development from initial opportunity identification and strategic fit assessment to financial modeling, due diligence, negotiation, and deal closure. This role owns the pipeline and is responsible for converting strategic intent into executed partnerships and ventures.
  • Strategic Translation (Not Creation): Collaborate closely with campus and and medical foundation Strategy VPs to understand internal service line capacity, physician needs, and geographic priorities. Use these insights to shape targeted business development efforts. While Strategy VPs define what needs to grow and why, this role determines how and with whom to grow externally.
  • JV Strategy & Management: Serve as the executive sponsor and deal lead for all Joint Venture (JV) opportunities (e.g., surgical facilities, payor partnerships, clinical services). This includes structuring deals, negotiating terms, and ensuring post-close performance aligns with the original business case.
  • External Relationships: Cultivate and maintain high-value relationships with external partners, including independent physician groups, third-party operators, digital health companies, and potential acquisition targets.
  • Contract Negotiation & Oversight: Oversee the legal, financial, and operational aspects of all major business agreements, ensuring favorable terms and alignment with the system's risk and financial tolerance.
  • Liaison Management: Directly manage the system's Physician Liaison/Outreach team. Redefine and focus this team's efforts based on strategic campus and service line priorities, moving them from general relationship management to targeted, data-driven referral growth.
  • Network Expansion: Develop strategies and programs to recruit, affiliate, and integrate high-volume physicians into the system's network, supporting both hospital and ambulatory growth goals.
  • Referral Analytics: Institute rigorous reporting and accountability for the physician liaison function, measuring performance based on quantifiable increases in targeted referrals and market share capture.
