The U.S. Consumer Services and Membership Digital Experiences Technology (USCDT) team brings together foundational strategic technology capabilities in digital experience engineering (Mobile and Web), AI/ML, marketing technology, enterprise communications, travel and lifestyle, and automation, grounded in our data technology model that prioritizes data governance. It employs a ground-breaking focus with development responsibilities for customer-facing capabilities that deepen and expand digital engagement, as well as core technical capabilities that cut across business lines and customer segments. How will you make an impact in this role? We are seeking a Vice President, Amex Offers to lead the technology strategy, architecture, and execution for one of our most visible and impactful customer value platforms. This role requires owning outcomes, setting direction, and raising the bar for engineering excellence across the team. The successful candidate is a hands-on technical leader who leads with credibility, demonstrates sound judgment, and consistently delivers results. They will operate at scale, influence broadly, and balance innovation with disciplined execution while upholding the highest standards of trust, security, and reliability. The VP will be accountable for building and evolving large-scale, highly available, data-intensive platform that power personalized, real-time offers for millions of Card Members and Merchants globally.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering, including 8+ years in senior technology leadership roles
  • Expertise in large-scale distributed systems, real-time data pipelines, and stream processing frameworks
  • Strong background in modern backend technologies (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Scala, or similar), APIs, and event-driven architectures.
  • Deep understanding of cloud platforms, microservices, data stores (SQL and NoSQL), and streaming technologies.
  • Track record of hands-on technical leadership — setting architectural direction, reviewing design docs, and guiding technical execution
  • Experience influencing across organizational boundaries without direct authority.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence executives and technical teams alike
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field; advanced degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Technology Strategy & Architecture
  • Set and own the long-term technology vision for Amex Offers, aligned with enterprise architecture standards and business strategy.
  • Lead with technical depth and credibility, actively engaging in architecture reviews, design decisions, and critical technical trade-offs.
  • Drive design and evolution of distributed, cloud-native systems capable of operating at global scale with high availability and low latency.
  • Model strong engineering judgment by balancing innovation, risk management, and operational excellence.
  • Champion security, resiliency, and data privacy as non-negotiable design principles.
  • Platform & System Delivery
  • Lead delivery of complex, cross-cutting initiatives involving real-time decisioning, large-scale data pipelines, and partner integrations.
  • Balance speed and quality while managing technical debt and long-term platform sustainability.
  • Establish clear technical standards, best practices, and operational excellence (monitoring, incident response, SLAs).
  • Engineering Leadership
  • Build and lead a high-performing, diverse organization of engineering leaders and senior technologists.
  • Create a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement, aligned to Amex leadership expectations.
  • Coach and develop leaders who can scale impact, make sound decisions, and lead through complexity.
  • Establish engineering excellence through code quality, system observability, automated testing, and production reliability (SRE)
  • Collaboration & Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Partner with Product, Data, and Business teams to translate business objectives into scalable technical capabilities
  • Engage with executive stakeholders to communicate technical strategy, trade-offs, and platform evolution
