About The Position

Supervises, mentors, trains, and evaluates assigned staff. Assigns duties and assures the effectiveness of department functions; performs duties of a licensed veterinary technician as required; provides service and guidance as needed to resolve internal (interdepartmental) and external customer concerns; collaborates with fellow Veterinary Services Supervisors and supervisors from other departments to improve care and services provided.

Requirements

Veterinary technician degree from a college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or the appropriate agency in the state where the college is located, or equivalent.
Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) by the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners; with continued employment contingent upon maintenance of such credentials.
Principles and practices of supervision and management of staff.
Principles and practices of veterinary nursing care and associated sanitary practices.
Animal breeds and characteristics.
Principles and practices of customer service.
Animal health, nutrition, and humane care.
Standard clinic practices and procedures, including record-keeping systems and the operation of office equipment, computers, and associated software.
Techniques for dealing effectively with co-workers and the public, in-person and over the telephone.
Correct business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Performing veterinary technician procedures.
Working with animals and demonstrating concern for their welfare.
Communicating respectfully, professionally, and effectively with staff, volunteers, and the general public.
Identification of problems and/or patient conditions (medical and behavioral) that need to be brought to the attention of the immediate supervisor.
Treating people and animals with compassion and respect.
Fostering public relations beneficial to the shelter and its programs.
Use of business software and associated computer hardware.

Responsibilities

Mentors and trains assigned staff to a level of competency or better, through initial and ongoing documented training plans, ensuring that all safety regulations, company policies, and procedures, ASV Guidelines, state laws, and regulations are followed.
Supervises and directs Veterinary Services staff throughout the day, and monitors the daily flow of Surgery. Ensures staff are following policies and procedures at all times. May be needed with Supervision of Shelter Medicine or the Public Clinic.
Assists with scheduling and coordinating the work of veterinary nursing and receptionist staff, volunteers, and students, including coverage for absences and vacancies, posting staff schedules by the 15th of each month for the following month.
Provides conflict resolution and mediates personnel problems, reporting results and issues to the Veterinary Services Manager.
Assists with reviewing staff performance, including monthly one-on-one meetings and annual performance reviews with assigned staff.
Assists with the screening and hiring of new and replacement staff, reviewing ADP weekly, and ensuring applicant feedback is current and interviews of applicants are completed in a timely manner.
Administers discipline in a timely manner, with proper documentation, and/or assists the Veterinary Services Manager with administering discipline as directed.
Ensures departmental protocols and policies are written and/or updated as SOPs, according to TAF SOP Guidelines, and in a timely manner.
Maintains a professional appearance at all times, following TAF’s current uniform policy.
Spot checks all work areas continuously to ensure cleanliness and neatness, and to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Assists staff in daily cleaning of the clinic area and ensures the areas are maintained in good repair; submits maintenance requests for repairs needed.
Assists Veterinary Services Manager with ensuring that the daily, weekly and end of month inventory of medical and operational supplies and equipment meets staff needs, is complete and correct, and items are ordered, stocked, and available for use; including maintaining documentation of the location of inventory by room and fixture.
Ensures initial medical assessment is conducted by the Veterinary Services team for all animals admitted throughout the day, with complete and accurate Chameleon entries. Works with the Admissions team in the Intake Medicine Exam Room to ensure a smooth pathway from “minute one” for animals admitted.
Works with Veterinary Services Manager to ensure necessary medical equipment is available, in good repair, and receives the required regular maintenance.
Provides information and assistance to internal and external guests as required, in a helpful, professional, and courteous manner.
Provides guidance as needed to resolve customer concerns, mentoring all employees in community outreach and responsiveness to community needs.
Develops and implements strategies to provide enhanced veterinary medical resources for pet owners in the community through TAF’s public Community Clinic, working cohesively with TAF’s outreach programs.
Works to ensure progress is made toward meeting community needs by continually improving programs and services, and mentoring team members to do so as well.
Ensures all departmental paperwork, such as controlled substance logs, surgery monitoring forms, consent forms, and other medical records paperwork is complete, accurate, and filed as required by the Nevada State Veterinary Board.
Responsible for the performance of all functions and essential duties of a veterinary technician according to State of Nevada veterinary law and provide compassionate and humane veterinary nursing care to the animals in our care in accordance with protocols created by veterinarians at The Animal Foundation.
Monitors the flow of surgery and ensures that all team members, students, and volunteers are performing anesthetic monitoring, surgical prepping, and recovery correctly. Ensures surgeries are prioritized appropriately by age and risk factors, and decreases the length of stay.
Prepares animals for surgical procedures, monitoring anesthesia, and performing recovery, pursuant to Nevada State law, and under the supervision of the veterinarian present.
Assesses personnel available and workload based on animals’ needs, and coordinates work assignments and the daily flow of work within Veterinary Services to maximize efficiency.
Administers prescribed medication to all animals in accordance with the laws and regulations of the State of Nevada, the regulatory oversight of the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, and the protocols of The Animal Foundation.
Provides routine medical testing and preventative care to animals as prescribed, including vaccines and other preventative medications.
Performs health screening exams for shelter animals prior to adoption and physical exams for foster animals.
Releases patients to their owners and provides detailed post-operative care and release instructions as needed.
Participates actively in leadership development and seeks self-improvement as a member of the Veterinary Services leadership team.
Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization’s service to its guests by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
