Organization: ACUP - DCM Residency Program Job Summary: JOB SUMMARY The Veterinary Resident reports to the Assistant Director of Education and Training of the Division of Animal Care for immediate oversight and coordination of duties. The Veterinary Resident will ensure that adequate veterinary care and other aspects of the program are in compliance with the regulatory standards in the DAC. In addition, the Veterinary Resident will participate in the DAC's efforts to improve services that support Vanderbilt's animal care program and researchers using animal models. This includes, but is not limited to, protocol review, consultation with investigators, and attendance at various meetings within the Division of Animal Care.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have passed the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) prior to the start of the program.
  • Applicants who have not graduated from an AVMA-accredited institution must hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (EGFVG) certificate or have completed the Program for Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE).

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical veterinary care to all animals maintained by Vanderbilt University
  • Perform veterinary rounds in animal facilities on a daily basis
  • Assist in the management of preventative medicine, health surveillance, disease prevention and clinical care for animals housed in assigned areas at Vanderbilt University
  • Develop diagnostic and treatment plans in consultation with Principal Investigators (PI) and faculty veterinarians
  • Assist in the completion of necropsies, including gross and microscopic examinations
  • In consultation with faculty veterinarians, perform additional clinical and other related duties as requested
  • Participate in protocol review process and in post-approval compliance monitoring
  • Assist PI personnel with writing of veterinary portions of IACUC protocols
  • Review protocols assigned by the protocol analyst and participate as a voting member of the review committee (as appointed)
  • Ensure congruency between reviews of similar protocols
  • Ensure protocols meet expectations of all regulatory agencies
  • Participate in semi-annual inspections, satellite facility inspections and other post-approval compliance monitoring activities as requested
  • Participate in the provision of training to Division of Animal Care and research personnel
  • Develop formal training materials on issues related to the care and use of animals in research and teaching
  • Provide hands-on training on clinical techniques for PI personnel and animal care staff through formal wet labs and informal interactions
  • Present formal small and large group lectures for PI personnel and animal care staff as assigned
  • Conduct a research project, mentored by a member of the Vanderbilt University faculty
  • Develop and implement a research project including protocol submission, data collection and result analysis
  • Prepare a paper based on the research project to be submitted for publication
