About The Position

Compensation: $22.00 - $26.00 Summary: Assist doctor and other hospital staff by care and cleaning of patients and facilities including completing patient treatments, assisting in surgery and all other animal care functions as well as other tasks involved in the operations of a veterinary hospital.

Requirements

  • Previous experience or training/education working in a veterinary facility preferred.
  • Must be friendly, outgoing, “people oriented.”
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Must be capable of being cross-trained for front office receptionist duties that will be expected in the job.
  • Telephone and computer skills are necessary.
  • Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments and to accept change.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Dependable attendance is required.
  • Any allergies to animals must be controllable through medication.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
  • Must be willing to work long or irregular hours under pressure conditions.
  • This position requires the ability to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people and understand written directions.
  • Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand, give information in person and over the telephone.
  • Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment such as electric clippers, syringes, radiology equipment, laboratory equipment, computers, etc.
  • Veteterinary Assistant must be comfortable communicating with clients and providing excellent patient care
  • He/she should be able to thrive in a fast paced environment and be dedicated to practicing high quality veterinary care
  • Strong prior experience in small animal veterinary practice, anesthesia and surgery or willingness to learn
  • Ability to multitask in a busy office and collaborate with other specialty services
  • Genuine compassion for patients and exceptional customer service
  • Proficient in restraint with geriatric patients, fragile eyes and for thorough ophthalmic exam to not affect diagnostic testing
  • Professional attitude and communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills

  • Commitment to continuing education and training

Responsibilities

  • Manage appointment days: obtain patient histories, vitals, medical record keeping, patient invoicing, create surgical/ procedure estimates, comfort with discussing finances with owners, scheduling procedures and rechecks
  • Follow up of tasks or communicating with owners over the phone
  • Manage surgical days: admitting patients, catheter placement, drug calculations, anesthesia care and monitoring (induction to recovery), surgical instrument care, OR and machine maintenance
  • Assist in the nursing care of CCU/Ophthalmology post op surgery patients/ hospitalized eye cases and discharging patients
  • Perform or assist with diagnostic testing and therapeutic procedures (Schirmer tear testing, tonometry, ocular ultrasounds, electroretinogram testing, intraocular pressures, fluorescein stains, etc)
  • Use and maintain instrumentation and equipment that is ophthalmology specific including phacoemulsification surgery equipment, surgical microscopes, ophthalmic lasers, etc.
  • Prepare, administer and dispense prescriptions both topical eye meds and oral medication
  • Organizes, cleans, stocks, and prepares treatment rooms for examination of animals, and holds or restrains animals during examination or treatment
  • Holidays and on call hours will be based on the needs of the hospital
