About The Position

The Veteran Affairs Specialist determines which courses are certifiable using degree plans, transcripts, etc. Certifies tuition adjustments and coursework for payment. Audits VA student files, certifications, and corrections for accuracy and documentation. Determines eligibility and processing Hazlewood and Department of Veterans’ Affairs benefits. Advises/counsels students, parents, and campus-wide partners on application process for VA educational benefits.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a university Registrar’s Office, Veterans Affairs office, Student Business Services, or Financial Aid office.
  • Knowledge of federal and state veterans’ education benefit programs, including GI Bill® programs (Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, 1606, 1607) and the Texas Hazlewood Act.
  • Experience interpreting and applying policies, rules, and regulations in a compliance-driven environment.
  • Direct experience certifying or reporting enrollments through VA‑ONCE, Enrollment Management, or similar VA systems.
  • Familiarity with VA compliance requirements, audits, and record‑retention standards.
  • Experience with student information systems (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft, Colleague, Workday Student).
  • Advanced Excel skills, including formulas, tracking spreadsheets, or data reconciliation.
  • Experience training or supervising student employees (including VA work-study students).
  • Experience supporting outreach or orientation events, such as new student orientations or veteran-specific events.
  • Prior work experience in a compliance‑driven or regulatory environment.
  • Understanding of military culture and the unique needs of veteran and military‑connected students.
  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.
  • Prior experience working with non-traditional or adult learners.
