About The Position

Transylvania University (www.transy.edu), a top-tier, independent, residential liberal arts college of 1,000 students in Lexington, Kentucky, invites applications for the position of Venue Technical Director for the Mitchell Fine Arts Center (MFA). This is a 12-month, full-time, on-campus position. The MFA Venue Technical Director oversees and coordinates the technical aspects of staging University, community, and professional performances; provides technical and artistic guidance and oversight to professional and/or student stage crews; serves as the on-site technical and management representative to performing groups, site users, and audiences and maintains all equipment used during events. This person supports all academic programs in the division of Fine Arts (specifically the Music Program and the Theater Program) and collaborates with University programs, events, and initiatives. In addition, this person is responsible for overseeing budgets, training and supervising student workers, developing policies for University performance spaces, purchasing, and implementing safety procedures and guidelines. This person is responsible for a 1,000-seat proscenium theater, a 250-seat thrust stage, a 125-seat black box, and a 60-person performance space.

Requirements

  • bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience
  • experience with lighting, fly and audio systems
  • mechanical skills in the operation and minor repair of sound, lighting equipment, and rigging
  • Candidates must be able to interpret and apply information from technical manuals
  • strong oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • provide stellar customer service in all interactions with faculty, staff, students, and guests and can relay information with empathy and respect

Nice To Haves

  • experience working at theatrical facilities or the equivalent
  • willing to learn new software programs and is someone who eagerly embraces opportunities to make systems or processes more efficient
  • knowledge of the Google suite of apps
