About The Position

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is seeking a Vehicle Maintenance Technician. Primary job duties will include installation of all police equipment in new patrol cars. The job also requires maintenance and mechanical work on Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge vehicles. The ideal candidate will possess an ASE Certification in Automotive Repair or have 5 years' experience as a mechanic in an automotive service department or experience installing emergency equipment in police vehicles. Requirements

  • ASE Certification in Automotive Repair or have 5 years' experience as a mechanic in an automotive service department or experience installing emergency equipment in police vehicles
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical system
  • Knowledge of vehicle powertrain components
  • Knowledge of other mechanical repairs on a vehicle
  • Ability to work independently and closely with others
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to safely work around machinery, forklifts and vehicles
  • Ability to work indoors and outside in cold and hot environments
  • Ability to kneel, bend and enter multiple areas of a vehicle
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems
  • Ability to remain flexible
  • Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation.
  • Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.
  • All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Mechanic Certification or relevant long term experience in the following: repairing, installing, upfitting and diagnosing emergency vehicle electrical systems.
  • Experience working in an automotive shop or working on emergency vehicles.
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred. If not currently held, it may be obtained after hire, with costs covered by the hiring agency.
