About The Position

We are seeking candidates for the position of Vehicle HVAC Specialist (0850) - Rail Vehicles in our Rail Vehicle Maintenance shopsCompensation Data-for SEPTA City Transit Division: $40/hr. (Increase to $44/hr. after 12 months) -for SEPTA Suburban Transit Division: $37/hr. (Increase to $41/hr. after 12 months) -for SEPTA Regional Railroad Division: $38/hr. (Increase to $43/hr. after 12 months) (Note, Candidate Division selection will be based on the needs of SEPTA)OVERALL DESCRIPTIONDiagnoses, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs HVAC Systems and related equipment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years training at an accredited Technical School or equivalent. In lieu of technical school training, five (5) years practical experience in a related field may be substituted.
  • Must have HVAC Universal EPA 608 Certification
  • Must have work experience in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment.
  • Must satisfactorily complete qualifications tests as follows: Electricity/Electronics, HVAC Electrical Schematics, Air conditioning and Refrigeration, Basic Mathematics, Hand Tools.
  • Must satisfactorily complete performance tests as required
  • Must have valid Pennsylvania driver's license or equivalent.
  • Will be required to possess or obtain hand tools as designated by the position's tool list.
  • Subject to call during storms and emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses mechanical, pneumatic and electrical troubles of a complex nature; determines extent of repairs, adjustment or replacement. Tests, troubleshoots, repairs and adjusts all types of heating and air conditioning systems and units, including mechanical, electrical and refrigeration components and piping. These heating/refrigeration units may be powered by high or low AC or DC, the compressors driven by internal combustion engines or electric motors which are considered part of the unit for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Checks, adjusts, repairs replaces and/or cleans evaporator cord compressor core and filter; compressors, expansion valves and all other electrical electronic, pneumatic and mechanical controls, switches, relays, regulators, valves, thermostats, switches, wiring and other units.
  • Removes, checks, overhauls, installs and aligns air conditioning compressors, high vacuum pumps and other air conditioning system components and service equipment.
  • Checks, repairs, replaces and installs refrigeration and pneumatic piping and high pressure lines. Performs silver soldering and brazing on high pressure lines and piping and normally works with refrigeration chemicals.
  • Renews and refits sections of pipe or tubing.
  • Fits and replaces refrigerant system mechanical and electrical components such as connecting rod, bearing, pistons and rings, wrist pins, cylinder sleeves (works to tolerance of 0.001 inch.)
  • Installs wiring hookup; rewires damaged or burned out circuits on heating, ventilating and refrigeration systems on rapid transit cars and work cars.
  • Performs layout work; makes wiring diagrams indicating new, modified or relocated HVAC circuits.
  • Performs wiring and conduit work on HVAC circuits, including controls.
  • Troubleshoots HVAC car wiring.
  • Works from manuals and specifications
  • Accomplishes daily and other reports and records as required.
  • Requests materials from Storeroom; cleans and clears work area.
  • Uses hacksaw, tube cutters, flaring tools, threading devices, solder and soldering irons, brazing and welding equipment (including high pressure nitrogen, oxygen and acetylene), high vacuum pumps, pressure and vacuum gauges, electronic meters, analog or digital volt-ohm or multi-meters, ammeters, mechanical and electronic refrigerant leak detectors, dual gauges, micrometers, Burdon & Myeloid gauges, torque wrench, reamers, valve grinders, valve reseaters, ridge reamers, fullers, plug gauges, megger, diagnostic equipment, electronic tests and repair instruments and other hand tools pertinent to the occupation.
