The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. The Vehicle Driver II performs highly complex motor vehicle operations work to support food service department operations for the assigned State Supported Living Center. This position is responsible for assigning delivery routes and tasks to ensure the delivery, storing, and issuing of food and supplies to designated units/areas, in a manner consistent with facility rules and regulations. The completion of work requires use of established methods and/or techniques. This position performs minor vehicle maintenance and requires maintaining forms and records pertaining to vehicle operation. Provides guidance and training to others as the senior-level driver for food service. Works under limited supervision of a Food Service Manager, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of methods used in delivery, receiving, storing and issuing of items distinctive to the Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF).
  • Knowledge and understanding of motor vehicle operations and traffic rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of cargo loading and unloading procedures and protocols.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Skill in the operations of motor vehicles.
  • Ability to follow schedules and instructions in operating vehicles.
  • Ability to communicate with others in a cooperative and positive manner.
  • Must possess physical ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds and to withstand excessive cold temperatures (i.e. working in freezer).
  • Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred.
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.

Nice To Haves

  • Work experience operating a motor vehicle with multiple passengers or transporting cargo.
  • Work experience performing vehicle preventative maintenance checks.
  • Work experience in receiving, storage and delivering food or supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Operates motor vehicles such as vans, trucks, and delivery trailers to transport cargo/food carts in a safe, sanitary and timely manner, securing and protecting items being delivered. Will operate vehicle power lift gates, manual hydraulic forklifts, and dollies. Maintains eligibility to operate state vehicles. Provides guidance to others on the safe operation of motor vehicles and cargo loading/unloading.
  • Determines delivery routes and coordinates and assigns tasks to ensure timely transport of items and safe loading and unloading of cargo.
  • Physical requirements of long standing, carrying, pushing and lifting of items up to 50 lbs.
  • Assists in the safe loading and unloading of cargo.
  • Ensures that vehicle cargo/food cart capacity is not exceeded, driver and passengers use safety restraints, and cargo/food carts are distributed to reduce maximum axle loading.
  • Receives, stores and issues food and supplies. Documents and reports when receiving new inventory and distributing inventory. Responsible for reviewing and verifying inventory and shipping documents.
  • Conducts safety checks of vehicles before departure. Maintains delivery vehicles at optimal condition. Performs basic vehicle maintenance, completes preventive maintenance checks, makes minor repairs, and fuels vehicles.
  • Prepares and maintains records and logs related to vehicle operations. Documents and reports minor vehicle maintenance and repairs. Accurately completes paperwork as per facility policy.
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
