OneEnergy is seeking a temporary Vegetation Monitoring Technician to work with our Midwest team on solar energy portfolios across Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Vegetation Monitoring Technician will be based out of our Madison, WI office, reporting to the Land Stewardship Manager, with the employment term ranging between the end of April through the end of August. This role will work closely with vegetation management contractors and the Delivery and Operations teams to support the management of high-quality vegetation within OneEnergy's solar projects. The primary duty of the position will be to survey native prairie vegetation, which will be done through ArcGIS Survey123 and Field Maps with a combination of timed meander surveys and quadrat sampling.

Requirements

  • Degree in Restoration Ecology, Conservation Biology, Botany, or related field; or currently pursuing a related degree.
  • Plant identification experience and familiarity with common native prairie plants and noxious or invasive weed species in the Midwest.
  • Ability to independently travel and access sites of varying terrain across Wisconsin and Minnesota. Position requires travel up to 80% of working time, and some overnights may be required.
  • Must carry an active driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Professional written and verbal communication, as well as interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated with proven ability to take ownership, initiative, and accountability.
  • Strong organizational skills, resulting in the ability to track vegetation observations across multiple projects.
  • A demonstrated ability with MS Office, MS Windows and project tracking software is required.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high level of integrity and organizational capacity to manage multiple projects.
  • A proven ability to provide efficient, timely, and reliable service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • A willingness to promote a culture of safety when visiting solar sites.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor vegetation establishment at solar project sites throughout Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota and record observations using ArcGIS Field Maps
  • Identify invasive or noxious weed species and monitor abundance
  • Evaluate plant communities within solar arrays using timed meander surveys and annual quadrat sampling to assess progress toward vegetation standards
  • Assess quality of pollinator habitat by recording which species are in bloom
  • Provide management recommendations based on field observations
  • Photograph vegetation to document establishment progress
