The Spooling Manager – VDC (BIM) is responsible for leading, managing, and coordinating all spooling activities within the Virtual Design & Construction department. This role oversees a team of VDC Spoolers and is accountable for the accuracy, quality, productivity, and schedule compliance of fabrication spool deliverables supporting the manufacturing and prefabrication operations. The Spooling Manager works closely with VDC Specialists, fabrication shop leadership, project teams, and management to ensure fabrication intent is clearly communicated, spooling standards are consistently applied, and prefabrication goals are achieved efficiently and safely

Requirements

  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical and/or plumbing system installation and prefabrication.
  • Prior experience with fabrication spooling and shop drawing production required.
  • Experience leading or mentoring technical staff strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with BIM and fabrication tools such as Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Autodesk Fabrication CADmep, and Navisworks.
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and validate complex construction documents and models.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on constructability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to coordinate activities across teams and monitor progress toward project goals.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the creation of fabrication spool drawings, spool maps, bills of materials, cut lists, and identification labels.
  • Ensure all spooling deliverables align with approved BIM models, fabrication standards, and installation requirements.
  • Review and approve spooling output for completeness, clarity, and constructability before release to fabrication.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex spooling challenges or coordination issues.
  • Collaborate with VDC Specialists to ensure scope definition, modeling accuracy, and constructability alignment.
  • Coordinate with fabrication shop leadership to support kitting, carting, sequencing, and delivery requirements.
  • Participate in project planning meetings and provide input regarding spooling schedules and fabrication readiness.
  • Act as a key liaison between VDC, fabrication, and project teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve spooling efficiency, automation, and standardization.
  • Provide input to management regarding hardware, software, and system requirements.
  • Support implementation of new tools, workflows, or technologies related to spooling and prefabrication.
  • Establish, enforce, and continually improve spooling standards, workflows, and best practices.
  • Lead QA/QC efforts for spooling deliverables, including spot checks and formal reviews.
  • Ensure fabrication intent is clearly and consistently communicated in all spooling documentation.
  • Coordinate corrective actions when quality issues are identified.
  • Provide direct supervision, mentoring, and performance management for VDC Spoolers.
  • Assign work, balance workloads, and establish priorities to meet project schedules and fabrication milestones.
  • Support onboarding, training, and continued development of spooling staff to improve accuracy, consistency, and productivity.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and professional team environment.
