Employment Type: Full-time (33.75 hours per week) Base Hourly: $17.53 Class/Calendar: A13, 9.25 months Benefits: Sick leave, holidays, retirement matched through the Arizona State Retirement System, health, and life insurance Performance Pay: Available annually New Hire Experience: 1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to a ten-year maximum New Hire Education: 1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position Job Summary: To drive a school van to safely transport students over scheduled routes and/or special excursions. Prior to obtaining bus certification, and throughout the first month of the new-hire probationary period, all Transportation employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. In accordance with federal safety regulations, this testing includes screening for marijuana/THC/CBD. Any employee with a confirmed positive test result will not be eligible for employment.

Requirements

• High School education or equivalent preferred
• Valid Arizona Drivers License with clean driving record a minimum of one year driving experience and be at least 21 years of age
• Must meet requirements for School Bus Driver Certification (i.e. pass first aide, CPR, and IVP fingerprint card)
• You must be able to pass a physical performance test in accordance with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Arizona Administrative Code
• Minimum of one year driving experience in Arizona
• Pay for a medical certificate form with a minimum of one year expiration date
• Models the attributes and skills of the MPS Portrait of a Graduate
• Demonstrates commitment to the MPS Promise that every student is known by name, served by strength and need, and graduates ready for college, career and community
• Successfully pass driver MPS Physical Performance Test and ability to acquire 1 st Aid/CPR certification
• Successfully pass department’s physical exam for drivers (bi-annually) and pre-employment, annual and random drug testing
• Successfully pass MPS transportation written and driving tests
• Proficient demonstration of driving skills; ability to drive under pressure and to use 2-way radio communication
• Ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) with students, parents, co-workers, and district personnel at all levels
• Ability to maintain confidentiality with respect to all information due to the sensitive nature of Families in Transition
• Ability to meet time schedules, punctuality, and reliability a must
• Ability to work varying driving assignments
• This position requires a range of physical abilities to perform the essential duties. Physical Demands: You may be required to do the following tasks frequently: Ability to pull, reach, push, bend, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and sit Using repetitive hand motions or manual dexterity Strong reflexes for steering, braking, and maneuvering the vehicle safely Speaking, hearing, and seeing (with or without correction) Maintaining focus for extended periods Lifting & Force: The job involves lifting and moving objects with the following frequency: Occasionally: up to 50 pounds of force Frequently: up to 30 pounds of force Constantly: up to 30 pounds of force

Responsibilities

• Drive school van safely to transport students over scheduled routes and/or special excursions in a timely manner
• Assist students and other passengers to provide for safe loading and unloading from the van during normal and emergency transport
• Assess potential emergency situations and take appropriate action to protect the safety and well-being of passengers
• Transport students in accordance with all safe van-riding rules and evacuation procedures
• Manage and handle conduct of students and passengers while they are in the van
• Prepare documentation for disciplinary problems to be administered by school administrators
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of each van driven each day to include trash clean-up, window and vehicle washing
• Report any discrepancies to vehicle maintenance following proper procedures
• Do not drive an unsafe vehicle; maintain cleanliness and sanitation of van
• Complete required paperwork and keep route details current
• Regular and on-time attendance required
• Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
• Ability to transport students safely across varying distances, including freeway driving, cross-city travel, and routes both within and beyond district boundaries
