About The Position

The Utility Worker III performs highly skilled and advanced manual work related to the construction, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of sanitary sewer, water, and storm drainage systems, as well as associated streets, sidewalks, and right-of-way infrastructure. This position serves as a lead worker on assigned projects, provides guidance and direction to utility crews, and ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and City policies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, plus a minimum of three (3) years of related utility or construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; kneeling, crouching, bending; pushing, pulling, reaching; and standing or walking for prolonged periods.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with a good driving record.
  • Traffic Control I (Flagging) certification.
  • Utility Safety and Trenching and Shoring Safety training.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional certifications related to wastewater, water distribution, or construction safety.
  • Prior experience serving as a lead worker or acting supervisor on utility or construction crews.
  • Experience working with wastewater rehabilitation or underground utility repair projects.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and performs highly skilled manual labor with a crew of utility workers in the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and construction of sanitary sewer lines, sewage facilities, water lines, storm drainage systems, streets, and sidewalks.
  • Provides leadership, instruction, and on-the-job training to subordinate staff while overseeing excavation, repair, and maintenance projects.
  • Assists with and oversees pipe installation, alignment, and grade adjustments to ensure compliance with project specifications and system integrity.
  • Ensures proper traffic control measures, trenching, shoring, and safety requirements are followed in accordance with City, state, and federal regulations.
  • Reads, interprets, and utilizes utility maps, drawings, and plans to perform daily maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assesses job site conditions and determines appropriate methods, materials, and equipment required to complete assigned projects safely and efficiently.
  • Operates and assists in the use of hand tools, power tools, and light to heavy equipment as required for utility work.
  • Serves as acting crew lead in the absence of the assigned Crew Leader, coordinating work assignments and maintaining productivity.
  • Responds to emergency call-outs after normal working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
  • Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.
  • Work the assigned schedule and comply with City timekeeping and attendance policy.
  • Other duties as assigned.
