About The Position

The Utility Worker I position plays a vital role in maintaining the city's water distribution & wastewater systems, contributing significantly to public health & community safety. This position involves a range of duties from the installation & repair of pipelines, valves, & manholes, to performing minor electrical & mechanical maintenance, ensuring the reliable functioning of essential infrastructure. The job requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with two years of experience in utility construction, plumbing, or related fields, emphasizing practical skills & familiarity with mechanical systems. This role directly impacts the daily lives of Salina residents by ensuring clean & efficient water services, making it an indispensable part of the city's operational team. Trainees gain hands-on experience in installing & repairing pipelines, valves, & manholes, along with the opportunity to perform essential electrical & mechanical maintenance. This guidance emphasizes skill-building, expertise, & teamwork. Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Two (2) years' maintenance of utility construction, general construction, plumbing, mechanical & electrical equipment maintenance or related work preferred.
  • Must live within 40 minutes response time.
  • Must possess valid Kansas driver's license.
  • Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Heavy lifting & manual labor.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs, cleans, taps, fits & inspects wastewater/water pipelines.
  • Installs & repairs wastewater/water valves & manholes.
  • Installs & repairs wastewater/water service lines.
  • Maintains wastewater pumps, motors & controls.
  • Installs & repairs fire hydrants.
  • Performs minor electrical & mechanical maintenance.
  • Performs custodial work such as cleaning, painting, lawn mowing & snow removal.
  • Installs & repairs chemical feed pumps & piping.
  • Performs permit required confined space entries.
  • Set-up & take-down appropriate traffic control signs & barricades.
  • Data entry to submit work orders, work assignments, & job tickets.

Benefits

  • 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
  • 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
  • Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
