About The Position

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is hiring a Utility Systems Maintenance Technician for SPU's Utility Operations & Maintenance Division. In this role, you will Inspect, maintain and repair critical parts and components including valves, actuators, pump motors, piping, metering, set points and pressures, flow irregularities, and various facility equipment. The Utility Operations & Maintenance Division provides core services to the three main lines of SPU business, Transmission, Distribution and Operations. We are responsible for the operations and maintenance of the primary drinking water and treatment for various facilities to include pump stations, reservoirs, dams and various types of regulating and control type valves. About Seattle Public Utilities: SPU is a community-centered utility that delivers vital services to Seattle residents and businesses including drinking water, drainage and wastewater, and garbage/recycling/compost. SPU also provides drinking water for 1.5 million customers in the region. SPU's work includes system maintenance and improvements and keeping Seattle clean. Over 1,400 SPU employees work with our community to provide affordable and equitable stewardship of our water and waste resources for future generations.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience working on utility mechanical systems such as pump station, OR
  • One (1) year of college/trade school with a concentration in a mechanical discipline and one (1) year experience in water and wastewater or other utility service in the repair of hydraulic and electric pumps, motors, or similar devices (combinations of training or experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).
  • Valid Washington driver's license prior to commitment of employment
  • Confined Space, Fall Protection, Traffic Control and Forklift Certifications are required within one (1) year of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of pressure reducing valves
  • General knowledge of all components of a water system pump station
  • Experience in lifting and rigging procedures
  • Ability to fabricate with mechanical discipline
  • Ability to work in confined space and fall protection
  • Experience in other safety related procedures
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain and repair critical parts and components including valves, actuators, pump motors, piping, metering, set points and pressures, flow irregularities, and various facility equipment.
  • Perform mechanical work on water systems
  • Install, maintain, and repair pressure, solenoid-controlled diaphragm, ball valves, and motor driven pumps.
  • Maintain zone pressures/critical system infrastructure to protect from over pressurization
  • Respond to system emergencies, troubleshoot valve/pump pressure and flow irregularities
  • Perform fabrication as needed such as drilling, cutting, welding and metal
