As a Utility Location Technician, you'll play a hands-on role in identifying, marking, and documenting underground utilities-ensuring safe excavation and supporting essential operations across the City. Whether you're just beginning your utility locating career or bringing years of specialized experience, we offer multiple levels (I-III) to match your skillset and support your professional growth. Higher-level technicians take on more complex locating assignments, advanced equipment use, and may provide training or informal leadership to junior staff. Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Experience in utility system maintenance, construction, operation, or utility locating (level-specific details below)
  • Valid Class E driver's license at appointment (Licensure requirement may be waived at the discretion of the department director)
  • Utility Location Technician I
  • Two years of experience in utility system maintenance, operation, or construction OR
  • One year of underground utility locating experience
  • Utility Location Technician II
  • Four years of experience in utility system maintenance, operation, or construction OR
  • Three years of experience locating underground water, sewer, gas, and electric facilities
  • Utility Location Technician III
  • Five years of experience in utility system maintenance, operation, or construction OR
  • Five years of experience locating underground water, sewer, gas, and electric facilities

Nice To Haves

  • Preference may be given to applicants with supervisory experience

Responsibilities

  • Locate and mark underground utilities such as water, sewer, gas, and electric systems
  • Use maps, as-built drawings, and electronic locating equipment to identify buried assets
  • Assist contractors, City staff, and the public with utility information and excavation safety
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed
  • Support field operations and respond to utility-related requests and issues
  • Help ensure regulatory compliance and promote safe digging practices
