Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact. The LMF Utilities Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing utility operations. This includes ensuring the safe and uninterrupted generation and distribution of utility services to meet the Foundry’s needs effectively. The role demands strong leadership and direct supervision of operators, including hiring, training, coaching, and development. The Supervisor integrates daily oversight of processes, equipment, facility, and personnel to safely produce quality products. Additionally, the Shift Supervisor must be adept at troubleshooting, problem-solving, proposing solutions, and supporting the implementation of improvements within their areas of responsibility. The Utilities Supervisor leads a team/shift that operates and maintains all utility systems (high purity water, compressed air, steam, chilled water, glycol, city water and sewers). This position is responsible for ensuring that all UMS alarms for the Foundry are monitored and responded to appropriately, while maintaining safe, compliant, and cost-efficient operations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written.
  • Ability to set expectations and to monitor results.
  • Willing to respond to call-in and scheduled overtime work.
  • Must be capable of lifting 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to withstand exposure to temperature variations while performing work outside in winter and summer weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s or associate Degree in science, engineering, or technical field
  • Previous experience in utility operations or directly supporting a pharmaceutical manufacturing operation.
  • Leadership experience
  • Skills in providing/receiving feedback and creating employee development plans
  • Basic computer skills (desktop software) are required.
  • Understanding of FDA guidelines and cGMP requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to various audiences, particularly one-on-one coaching and feedback with direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the safety culture and HSE compliance in daily work
  • Comply with all HSE aspects and support departmental HSE plans
  • Participate in and promote the use of all safety programs.
  • Participate in self-assessments for HSE programs.
  • Lead monthly safety meetings.
  • Provide a safe working environment by continued development of the safety strategy efforts to help drive continuous improvement and accountability.
  • Engage the team in safety initiatives.
  • Have sufficient technical proficiency of unit operations in order to solve problems and conduct effective investigations (safety, environmental, quality)
  • Ensure that operators are trained, qualified and fit to do their daily work.
  • Ensure understanding and compliance with established procedures and policies (safety, environmental, quality, production, human resources, maintenance…)
  • Ensure equipment and facilities are maintained in a manner fit for use.
  • Maintain a state of inspection readiness.
  • Ensure documents related to operations are accurate and executed as written using good documentation practices.
  • Ensure all service level agreement excursions are reported as observations.
  • Authorize overtime to ensure the shift is properly staffed to conduct the operations in a safe and compliant manner
  • Ensure the Utility operations functions are performed in timely, proactive, compliant, and cost-effective manner.
  • Engage in process team initiatives; evaluate proposed changes in processes or equipment and influence the outcomes and design.
  • Support communications between shifts and the functional teams to sustain and improve communications.
  • Ensure continuous supply of utilities to customers within service level agreement parameters.
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide leader-led training to qualify employees to operate utilities process systems.
  • Apply technical expertise and background to ensure all plant utility systems are maintained in a high state of readiness and participate in the long-term upgrade/replacement strategy development.
  • Effectively (clearly and accurately) make and communicate decisions to staff and management including communicating the rationale behind decisions made
  • Working with other Supervisors, Process Teams, and Operators to identify opportunities to reduce and prevent issues from occurring (targeted continuous improvement)
  • Communicating operations floor issues (safety, environmental, quality, etc.), status of operations to process owners in a timely manner
  • Understand the BCP and emergency management and site outage practices.
  • Partner with the maintenance leader to create and improve job plans and procedures and efficiently coordinate and schedule maintenance activities.
  • Act as a liaison between Process Teams and Operators
  • Partner with engineering to create and improve UMS operator actions to ensure operators take appropriate action when alarms are received.
  • Oversee development of performance management plans for operations personnel.
  • Conduct at least three check-ins annually (Set objectives, mid-year, and final review).
  • Develop direct reports by identifying skill gaps, ensuring the availability of appropriate training, provide coaching and address performance issues.
  • Deal effectively with team members that are not meeting their Performance Management plan goals.
  • Working with other Supervisors, Process Teams, and Operators to identify opportunities to reduce and prevent issues from occurring (targeted continuous improvement)
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with the user community to proactively understand their needs and provide utility services to enhance their abilities to meet the corporate objectives of the LTC customer base.
