About The Position

The Utility Mechanic/Stationary Engineer focuses on operating, maintaining, and repairing critical facility support equipment within our Utilities department. You'll ensure optimal performance of essential systems including high-pressure steam boilers, hot water systems, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, air compressors, water treatment systems, heat exchangers, and their supporting infrastructure. Your role is vital to maintaining the facility's research capabilities through reliable utility operations while working directly under the site Chief Utilities Engineer. This position requires providing control room operating shift coverage across all three current operator shifts as needed, ensuring 24-hour facility coverage. You'll need to complete training on all three shifts to provide backup support when other operators are absent.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of trades schooling in high pressure boiler and industrial refrigeration/HVAC operation and theory
  • 2+ years of experience in facility/plant engineering maintenance or school equivalent
  • Class 1 Stationary Engineers License
  • Valid Missouri driver's license
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Ability to interpret piping and instrumentation drawings
  • Capability to troubleshoot problems, identify root causes, and implement remedies
  • Experience performing maintenance tasks, lubrication, and inspection/repair of utilities systems
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 35-50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Capability to work safely and autonomously in loud environments
  • Willingness to learn site utilities operation for power plant shift coverage
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with ability to work effectively in diverse team environments
  • Positive work attitude with self-motivated approach
  • Ability to read and understand repair manuals, specifications, drawings, and schematic diagrams

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on utilities equipment and troubleshoot system issues as they arise, determining whether repairs can be handled internally or require outside contractor services.
  • Operate high-pressure steam and hot water boilers in full compliance with manufacturer recommendations and applicable permits and regulations.
  • Start and stop equipment to follow site heating and cooling load demands using building automation systems will be routine, including maintaining proper salt levels in brine tanks (requires lifting 50-pound bags).
  • Conduct water testing and treatment for boilers and chilled water systems, ensuring compliance with the site water safety management plan. All maintenance activities, equipment readings, building rounds, engineering logs, and incident reports must be documented accurately.
  • Monitor fuel storage systems and maintain usage logs for various utilities in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Control room operations require immediate response and corrective action to alarm conditions on a 24-hour, 7-day basis with backup support available.
  • Monitor building automation systems to ensure proper operation of boiler and chiller plants as well as air-handling equipment.
  • Safety protocols are paramount throughout all activities. You'll consistently apply lock out/tag out processes to isolate equipment before maintenance work, comply with all Environmental, Safety and Health programs, and maintain JLL's safety culture standards.
  • Professional interaction with operations team members, monitoring subcontractor activities, and assisting craft technicians in other facility maintenance trades rounds out your collaborative responsibilities.
