About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Utilities Manager/Director, this position is to install, maintain and repair pumps, motors, electrical/mechanical controls, valves, pipe work, basic electronic equipment, and various structures for District utilities operations. This position will be required to report to work for any emergency water, irrigation or sewer main breaks; shutdowns or overflows should it occur during non-business hours or weekends as on-site crew requires. Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation: If assigned, employees in this classification will be required to report and carry out duties as directed for the duration of an emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience in mechanical or electrical maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Must be 18 years old and a United States Citizen or eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and alcohol and drug test.
  • FWPCOA Utilities Maintenance Level III Certification (or comparable qualification) or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
  • FWPCOA Wastewater Collection System Operator C Certification (or comparable qualification), or ability to obtain within
  • First Aid/CPR or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
  • Must possess a Class E state driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • FEMA ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-700 or ability to obtain within three (3) months.
  • FWPCOA Basic Electrical and Instrumentation (or comparable qualification) or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
  • OSHA Ladder Safety Training and Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year.
  • FDOT Intermediate Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Certification (or ability to obtain within one (1) year)
  • Collection and distribution methods and procedures, and sanitary characteristics of water/wastewater and chemicals used in the construction, maintenance, and repairs collection and distribution infrastructure/processes.
  • Equipment and tools, safety precautions and occupational hazards associated with collection/distribution chemicals and operations.
  • Backflow prevention and cross-connection controls and processes.
  • All relevant federal, state, and local regulatory statutes, codes, ordinances, and safety regulations or the means to access such.
  • Report and record maintenance principles and practices.
  • Use of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and GIS systems.
  • Use of modern office equipment, computers, electronic devices, and various programs and applications, including Microsoft Office Products.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and train junior operators.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, replaces and/or repairs various electrical/mechanical components and equipment, i.e., pumps, motors, gates, blowers, meters, switches, transformers, fans, belt presses, compressors, generators, pressure and flow control valves, check valves, sediment filters and pipelines; may perform welding and fabrication of needed parts.
  • Inspects components and equipment for proper operating condition; observes actions and records readings and test results of all work/service performed; disassembles and inspects internal components and working condition; recognizes and reports any detected deterioration, repair needs, and maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, and manual control systems; calibrates electronic control systems; reads and interprets electrical schematics, blueprints, diagrams, plans, and/or sketches in the preparation and performance of tasks.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; wears protective gear.
  • Orders materials, parts, supplies, components, and/or equipment to maintain service truck inventory and for assigned work orders.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate records and logs of all work performed, vehicle inspections, supplies/materials used, and conditions observed.
  • Participates in emergency preparedness planning per established procedures; prepares chain saws and tools; prepares shop and trucks; stages all equipment; transports generators to essential sites.
  • Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Position will require the employee to be placed into the department’s rotating on-call schedule once they are sufficiently trained as determined by the Utilities Manager/Director.
  • Performs other duties as required.
