About The Position

Provide adequate and appropriate age-based advising and developmental support to project participants residing in the residence halls; Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills; Demonstrated mediation and conflict resolution skills; Ability to maintain confidentiality; Dates of summer program (including training) are May 26th-July 3rd 2026 This is a temporary position from May 26th-July 3rd 2026.  The total pay of $5000 is split as follows:  May - $769, June - $3,846, July - $385

Requirements

  • Completion of at least one year of graduate study in Counselor Education, Social Work, or Psychology
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP
  • Successful criminal background check necessary for working with minors is required
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR is required and will be provided during the week of training.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Counselor Education, Social Work or Psychology
  • Ability to be on-call to respond to and resolve participant issues on evenings and weekends for the duration of the summer program

Responsibilities

  • Reside in the UW residence halls 6 days a week for the duration of the summer program May 26th-July 3rd 2026
  • Assist participants in overcoming obstacles to achieving their academic and/or personal goals while promoting college access and success.
  • Create a safe environment for participants and staff to discuss concerns, receive feedback, and deal with issues that may be preventing participant success.
  • Discuss consequences of behavior with participants when violations are issued.
  • Facilitate participant stress relief and help to ease transition issues as needed.
  • Assist with participant supervision as requested.
  • For more serious issues (e.g., suicide, abuse, drug/alcohol addictions), consult with UB/UBMS professional staff regarding referrals to outside agencies.
  • Attend residential staff meetings and participant activities and communicate relevant information to staff in each area.
  • Actively participate in participants’ academic success, including, but not limited to, periodically attending classes, mentoring, helping with homework and checking on completion.
