About The Position

The Upward Bound Academic Counselor provides academic, career, and social counseling to first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented high school students. The role involves guiding students through educational planning, assisting with college readiness, supporting recruitment, and coordinating workshops, tutoring, and summer program activities. The counselor also serves as a liaison with families, school staff, and community resources while ensuring accurate record-keeping and effective program administration.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Education, Guidance and Counseling, or related field.
  • Minimum of two years' experience working with low-income, first-generation, high-risk, or underrepresented students.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to engage diverse communities and serve as a liaison.
  • Experience in programming, scheduling, data management, and administrative processes.
  • Skilled in reviewing and interpreting transcripts and test scores.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic, career, and social counseling to program participants.
  • Implement referrals and follow-up with staff and support units.
  • Assist with recruitment and selection of eligible students.
  • Develop and maintain Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for participants.
  • Review and interpret high school transcripts and test scores.
  • Plan and coordinate academic tutoring sessions.
  • Schedule and supervise field trips, workshops, and program activities.
  • Chaperone cultural field trips
  • Lead workshops on admissions, financial literacy, and FAFSA.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians.
  • Assist with planning and execution of the summer program.
  • Manage administrative tasks such as programming, scheduling, forms, and data management.
