About The Position

Under direction of the Head of Upper School, the Upper School Long-Term Substitute Spanish teacher from 08/12/26 - 11/06/26 . Candidate will be responsible for planning and implementing lessons for multiple levels of Spanish courses, facilitating student language acquisition and conversational confidence through strategies that focus on providing comprehensible input. Qualified candidates will be able to create and provide an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of adolescents to ensure success for each student as well as monitor and evaluate academic outcomes. The teacher may also serve as an advisor to a group of Upper School students and may supervise students in a variety of school-related settings. All Cape Henry Collegiate teachers are expected to communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community in a manner that represents the mission and core values of the school. The status of this listing is temporary full-time.

Requirements

  • Prior experience implementing or willingness to be trained in a Comprehensible Input (CI) focused approach, also known as Acquisition Driven Instruction (ADI). Strategies utilized may include use of comprehension-based readers, content-based instruction, and TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading & Storytelling), among others.
  • Strong Spanish language proficiency allowing for confident, spontaneous interaction in the language.
  • Ability to plan and implement effective lessons to engage Upper School students and increase their awareness and appreciation of Francophone culture.
  • Effective use of formative and summative evaluation to meet the needs of each student.
  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
  • Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum.
  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, students, parents and community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Spanish or a valid teaching credential from an accredited college or university, or considerable relevant experience.

  • Candidates with a master’s degree and/or state teaching license will be given preferential treatment.
  • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted in some areas.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement lessons that meet the curricular guidelines for the appropriate level of Spanish.
  • Collaborate with colleagues around best practices to maximize student language acquisition and growth in proficiency through a Comprehensible Input (CI) focused approach.
  • Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
  • Create a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and fair classroom environment for all students.
  • Collaborate with the World Languages Department and the Grade Level team to support both curricular goals as well as the social, emotional, and academic wellbeing of students.
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
