About The Position

Upper School History Teacher (2026-27 School Year) Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, independent, coeducational day school of 1,650 students in preschool through grade 12. The School is seeking a full-time Upper School History Teacher who will be responsible for instructing Upper School students in history courses in accordance with the content and objectives of the curriculum established by the School. Experience with United States History and World History is preferred. Our Upper School division is composed of grades 9 through 12. Experience teaching honors-level courses, such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate, is also preferred. The Upper School History Teacher will display a continuous commitment to developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills (intercultural competence) to engage in appropriate and effective communication with students, colleagues, and families from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We desire candidates who will contribute to the school's efforts to continue creating a more inclusive and equitable community where all individuals can develop a sense of belonging.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in history, or comparable discipline, from an accredited college or university.
  • Preferably three or more years of teaching secondary or post-secondary history, with experience teaching World History.
  • Fluency in the use of technology in the classroom.
  • Willingness to support diversity and inclusion efforts at the school.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with United States History and World History is preferred.
  • Experience teaching honors-level courses, such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate, is also preferred.
  • The School highly values advanced degrees, such as Master's and Doctorates, and considers them not only in determining compensation but also when selecting and prioritizing candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students in history in accordance with curriculum requirements and department objectives.
  • Develop organized lesson plans that emphasize empathy for and understanding of historic cultures and societies, as well as individuals of every socio-political stratum, and empower students to personalize history while appreciating the achievements and sacrifices of those who came before them.
  • Design instruction that challenges students to think and write critically through the evaluation of both subjective and objective evidence, enabling them to formulate clear positions that require analysis, synthesis, contextualization, and historical literacy.
  • Place an emphasis on thematic history and the interrelationship of events rather than the memorization of facts, encouraging students to focus on the how and why of history instead of solely on names and dates.
  • Evidence enthusiasm for and continued development of content knowledge in subject matter.
  • Participate as an active team member within the History Department, the Upper School faculty, and the School community, demonstrating a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and assessments, which address multiple learning styles and modalities.
  • Serve as advisor to a small group of students and participate in various Upper School activities such as committees, division level meetings, clubs and organizations.
  • Supervise students in numerous activities, functions and circumstances at the School.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole.
  • The ability to implement classroom management techniques that foster academic achievement, personal responsibility, intellect and individuality within students.
  • A record of exceptional collaboration with colleagues to provide the best curriculum and instruction possible for students.
