About The Position

This is a proactive search. There is not currently a vacancy for this position. The Potomac School Science Department seeks candidates for an Upper School Science Teacher for a potential opening for the 2026-2027 school year. This position is a full-time, 10-month position, reporting to the Head of the Upper School and is responsible for teaching chemistry classes, including the possibility of advanced-level courses, and supervising independent research projects as part of the Science and Engineering Research Center , including helping students connect with internship opportunities and guiding them through the research and documentation process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably with previous experience teaching chemistry at the Upper School level.
  • Ability to communicate, motivate, and understand the students’ educational and emotional needs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student achievement.
  • Enthusiasm and joy for working with students.

Responsibilities

  • Inspire a love of science in students through teaching four classes and manage a student advisory.
  • Build relationships with students via the classroom.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instruction in a manner that facilitates active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods such as discussions, group activities, and occasional lectures.
  • Work with students to encourage and facilitate each individual’s growth.
  • Collaborate actively with science department colleagues, including on curriculum and course planning.
  • T each the assigned curriculum, evaluate students’ progress, and inform parents of progress.
  • Keep attendance records; manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students.
  • Meet with parents as needed to discuss student progress and challenges.
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops.
  • Demonstrate personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, including understanding of the characteristics of the age group taught.
  • Work in an organized, dependable, patient, and creative manner.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
