About The Position

We are currently searching for Upper School AP Chemistry Lab Teachers for our Summer Program! (Rate is dependent upon sessions worked, subject to change due to enrollment changes) Must be available to work the following dates: Training Dates: June 11th - 12th Course Dates: June 15 - July 24th Summer programs at Harker include a wide variety of academic and recreational offerings. Click here to learn more about our Summer Program: http://www.harker.org/summer Position Summary: The AP Chemistry Lab teacher will oversee all operations essential to the smooth implementation of Chemistry Labs. Responsibilities include but are not limited to lab safety, managing students during lab lessons, and collaboration with small team of chemistry teachers to make the program successful.

Requirements

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related STEM field
  • Valid teaching credential, a graduate degree in education, and/or prior teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards for chemistry laboratory safety , including clear procedures, active supervision, and consistent enforcement of safety expectations
  • Comfort managing groups of students during hands-on chemistry labs (pacing, transitions, materials handling, and appropriate lab behavior)
  • Demonstrated collaboration, collegiality, and strong organization
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary direction and instruction to campers.
  • Ability to communicate and train students and staff in safety regulations and emergency procedures in their specific area.
  • Abilities to observe student behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the position.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid and emergency responses.
  • Cognitive and communication abilities to assist in the planning and implementing the activity to achieve camper development objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate established chemistry labs: lead students through lab activities where the lab plans, materials, and overall structure have already been developed (no lesson planning required)
  • Maintain safe lab operations: monitor student technique, manage lab flow, ensure proper PPE use, and respond appropriately to routine lab issues to keep the environment safe and productive
  • Support students during mid-day office hours: answer questions about homework, concepts, lab assignments, and study strategies
  • Assessment support: help proctor and grade assessments, including two major tests, using provided rubrics/answer keys and program norms for consistency
  • Contribute to a positive team culture: work closely with a small team of chemistry teachers to keep the program running smoothly (communication, reliability, and shared problem-solving)
