About The Position

The University Student Assistant Employee is responsible for First and Second Year Experience Office operations and is responsible for assisting with special events within the Student Success Center including, but not limited to: Gamecock Orientation, Freshman Convocation, Preview Day, Admitted Student Day, etc. Positions may be filled based on individual applicants’ skills, qualifications, and departmental needs. Adheres to all department and University policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. )
  • If not a first-time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 2.00 or higher.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU

  • Ability to read and comprehend written materials encountered on the job.
  • Ability to gather and analyze information in order to make recommendations.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to changing situations and requirements.
  • Ability to set goals and objectives and develop strategies to achieve those goals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with office work including reviewing reports, printing information, creating packets for students, etc.
  • Work tabling events for the First & Second Year Experience Office.
  • Assist students with the transition to college during the fall and spring semesters with a positive and friendly demeanor.
  • Able and willing to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Communicate with the First & Second Year Experience Office staff, co-workers, campus directors, students, administration, and other contacts in a professional manner.
  • An understanding and commitment to encouraging and developing student involvement.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Director for First & Second Year Experience.
  • Host check-ins with first year students to discuss and prioritize time management, conflict management, academic coursework, and other identified issues that may arise.
  • Assist the Coordinator for Peer Mentoring with hosting check-in sessions for peer mentors and help recruit future peer mentors.
