About The Position

This is a Student Assistant position within a public university. The employee is responsible for First- and Second-Year Experience Office operations and reports to the Director for First- & Second-Year Experience. This position is responsible for assisting with special events within the Student Success Center including, but not limited to: Gamecock Orientation, Freshman Convocation, Freshman Forum, Lambda Sigma Sophomore Honor Society, and marketing for the First- & Second-Year Experience Office. Work is assigned with general instructions from the Director for First- & Second-Year Experience and reviewed for effectiveness and adherence to office and departmental goals. (1) Serves as co-advisor to Freshman Forum. (2) Serves as co-advisor to Lambda Sigma Sophomore Honor Society. (3) Assists in planning Gamecock Orientation. (Assists the First- & Second-Year Experience Office in selection and training of Gamecock Orientation Leaders, coordinates music and lighting, coordinates with other campus office to create browse session at Gamecock Orientation, coordinates publications and presentations for Gamecock Orientation.) (4) Attends the NODA association for orientation, transition, and retention national conference. (5) Assists in planning Freshman Convocation in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Affairs. (Coordinates with Jax State Cheerleaders, Cocky, Southerners and Faculty Senate for the execution of Freshman Convocation and oversees all aspects of Freshman Convocation and serves as director of event alongside the Coordinator for Peer Mentoring.) (6) Assists with managing peer mentorships setup through the first-year mentoring program. (7) Assists with the selection, recruitment, and training for SSC 101 mentors. (8) Assists in teaching SSC 101. (9) Coordinates tables and student volunteers for spring and fall Preview Day. (10) Performs other duties assigned by the Director for First- & Second-Year Experience.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
  • Demonstrates effective public speaking skills
  • Knowledge of the Student Success Center responsibilities and major events.
  • An understanding and commitment to encouraging and developing student involvement.
  • An eagerness to develop and mentor campus leaders.
  • The ability and willingness to communicate with the First- & Second-Year Experience Office staff, co-workers, campus directors, students, administration and other contacts in a professional manner.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written materials encountered on the job.
  • Ability to gather and analyze information in order to make recommendations.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to accept night and weekend hours.
  • Basic computer knowledge (Microsoft office, internet, etc.)
  • Experience using computer programs and social media outlets to create publications, documents, and records.
  • Experience creating professional presentations to be used across campus for a variety of audiences.
  • Developed creative writing skills.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to changing situations and requirements.
  • Ability to set goals and objectives and develop strategies to achieve those goals.
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a Jax State student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester.
  • If not a first-time student, applicant must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJaxState.
