About The Position

The University Services Grounds Technician is responsible for the general care and upkeep of the Post University campus grounds, ensuring a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment. This role involves routine landscaping tasks and may also include special projects, such as assisting with construction, repairs, and operating heavy machinery. The technician will operate equipment, including snowplows, skid steers, and backhoes/excavators. As part of the University Services Department, the technician will also be responsible for maintaining safety across the campus and college property. This position plays a key role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming campus environment. The Grounds Maintenance Technician must be committed to delivering high-quality work and fostering team collaboration, while ensuring that all assigned tasks are completed efficiently and to standard.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Eligible candidates must possess a CT Driver’s License with a clean driving record. Post University uses MVR reports as part of the pre-employment screening process.
  • Operation of motorized grounds equipment, including snowplows, skid steers, and backhoes/excavators.
  • Awareness of occupational hazards and safe working practices.
  • Familiarity with building and grounds construction, maintenance materials, and equipment.
  • Proficient operation of snowplows, skid steers, and backhoes/excavators.
  • Strong reading and writing skills.
  • Effective interpersonal communication.
  • Solid mechanical skills for maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Capability to read and interpret basic diagrams and plans.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to climb, work in tight spaces, walk long distances, and work in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift to 25 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds frequently, and occasionally lift over 100 pounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to perf01m tasks requiring significant physical effort, including climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and repetitive motion.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various grounds equipment, including tractors, mowers, trucks, and other machinery.
  • Maintain lawns, hedges, trees, bushes, flowers, and other landscaping elements through cutting, trimming, and general care.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including dump trucks, man lifts, and skid loaders with attachments.
  • Haul trailers and transport materials across the campus.
  • Water, fertilize, and care for lawns and landscapes as directed.
  • Collect and remove debris, including leaves, branches, dead plants, and trash, from campus grounds.
  • Participate in campus landscaping projects as needed.
  • Replace bricks, blocks, and concrete in campus structures as directed.
  • Clear snow from parking lots and walkways; apply salt as necessary to maintain safe conditions.
  • Operate power tools, including chainsaws, overhead saws, and grinders.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of hand tools, power tools, and machinery.
  • Support welding and fabrication tasks, as well as perform routine maintenance on small engine vehicles and trailers.
  • Paint equipment and vehicles as directed.
  • Assist in parking lot stripping and maintenance activities.
  • Support the installation of drains, water lines, and the cleaning of storm drains.
  • Collaborate in planning and executing construction projects and general repairs.
  • Perform safety checks and report hazardous conditions.
  • Work effectively within a team to support the university's mission and objectives.
  • Complete OSHA/safety training as required by management.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Grounds Supervisor or University Services Department staff.
