About The Position

The Unit Secretary, Nursing provides a variety of routine and specialized clerical and administrative duties to support a nursing care unit. This role involves executing various clerical tasks, prioritizing information and requests efficiently, and fostering cooperation among staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers. The secretary must adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure patient privacy and safety. Additionally, the position may include orienting new staff members to the department or unit.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • 2 years of recent relevant experience
  • Knowledge of various medical terminology, procedures, views, and equipment
  • Written and verbal communication skills to communicate with fellow team members, supervisors, patients, and other personnel
  • Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies and procedures to achieve objectives and meet deadlines
  • Advanced knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook), electronic health records (EHR), EPIC, and related information systems
  • Ability to interpret a variety of data and instructions, furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies and procedures to achieve objectives and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently as well as be part of a team, accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options
  • Ability to ensure the privacy of each patient’s protected health information (PHI)
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with peers and other staff members to achieve departmental and corporate objectives
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and utilize developed administrative skills
  • Able to demonstrate competent job performance and effective communication

Responsibilities

  • Provide a variety of routine and specialized clerical and administrative duties in support of a nursing care unit
  • Execute a variety of clerical duties
  • Prioritize information and requests in a timely manner
  • Gain confidence and cooperation from staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers
  • Adhere to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety
  • Orient new staff to the department/unit (May also be responsible for)
  • Prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies and procedures to achieve objectives and meet deadlines
