About The Position

Job Summary Multi-function job requires incumbents to be cross-trained to perform Unit Secretary duties as well as at least one other clinical support job at least 30% of time in each role. Cross training may be in jobs such as Patient Care Technician, Nursing Specialty Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, Monitor Technician. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, performs receptionist and patient care clerical duties as required for a Unit Secretary. Additional functions performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse may include one or more of the following duties: observing cardiac monitors to identify abnormal heart rhythms; data collection related to patient status; performance of basic nursing procedures, monitoring, measuring and documentation of patient responses; performing and/or assisting with treatments and procedures; assists with maintenance of patient care equipment. When scheduled in the role of Unit Secretary, process physician orders accurately and utilizes computerized systems to order tests, procedures, etc., and to schedule patient tests and activities. In certain settings, may also register and discharge patients on a limited basis. Performs general reception and clerical duties at the nurse's station, including responding to patient calls via intercom or in person, and activating code/fire alarms. Prepares and processes patient records from admission through discharge, assuring that appropriate forms are in proper order, flags physician orders and other documents for physician signature. Performs general clerical duties such as filing, maintaining unit forms, assembling new charts, photocopying, faxing information, and other clerical duties as assigned. Performs effective customer service skills, to include, but not limited to, responding to patients, family and staff with kindness, courtesy, professionalism and efficiency. Participates in patient care rounding in collaboration with unit staff. Participates in orienting medical students and residents to the unit. Performs one of the following duties on a nursing unit per the job description: PCT/NST/Certified Nursing Assistant/Monitor Tech: See job functions for specific job duties. May perform EKG and phlebotomy. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education - If job combination is US/CNA, US/PCT or US/NST, job requires related course work beyond high school (i.e., meets the job education requirements for one or more of the following: PCT, CNA, or NST). If job combination is US/Monitor Tech, then HS Diploma or GED is preferred.
  • Experience - Six (6) months clerical or health field related experience required for the US portion of this job.
  • JOB RELATED CERTIFICATION - COTR
  • If EKG and/or US/Monitor Tech, then successful completion of Prisma Health arrhythmia exam
  • If EKG and/or US/Monitor Tech, then Annual arrhythmia competencies must be maintained and tracked through Learning & Development.
  • Meets the application certification requirement for the corresponding job if job combination is US/CNA, US/PCT or US/NST. Acceptable certifications for the specific corresponding job include CNA, EMT, Paramedic Cert Surg. Tech or Cert Medical Assist.
  • If job combination is US/Monitor Tech, there is no actual certification, but validation of annual arrhythmia competency is required.

Nice To Haves

  • If US/Monitor Tech, then completion of a Telemetry training program or previous experience is preferred.
  • US training program or on-the-job training - preferred.
