About The Position

The Hacienda Day Camp Counselor plans, leads, and implements camp programs for Girl Scouts. Counselors prioritize safety and fun while creating a camper-led environment that fosters growth and independence. They work collaboratively with other staff to supervise campers and ensure their safety, development, skill achievement, and overall well-being. The duties of a Camp Counselor frequently include outdoor activities in varying weather conditions; staff may be exposed to sun, wind, and rain outside of their immediate control.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age on or before 5/28/2024.
  • Belief in the mission of Girl Scouts and ability to communicate the mission to others
  • Ability to commit to entire camp schedule and dates of temporary agreement
  • An ability and willingness to participate in camp activities with campers
  • Ability to become 1st Aid/CPR certified; ability and willingness to assist in an emergency in a calm and mature manner
  • Activities occur both inside and outside; may have some exposure to environmental conditions, though not substantially exposed to extreme environmental conditions
  • Promote a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for all
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexible and able to problem solve and self-direct
  • Capable of working under pressure and handling multiple demands/heavy volume
  • Possess the character, skills, and ability to be a positive role model for Girl Scouts and adults.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Background Check and/or obtain an Arizona Fingerprint Card
  • Ability to arrange for timely transportation to and from work locations. If driving, proof of meeting Arizona State requirements regarding auto licensing, driver’s license, and liability insurance, if applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of college or equivalent life/work experience preferred, with preference given for youth camp counselor experience
  • Ability to deliver program plans within assigned group and/or setting, to include teaching, working with, and relating to Girl Scouts
  • Lifeguard certification preferred, but not required
  • Previous Girl Scout experience and knowledge preferred
  • Previous work experience in a non-profit or youth services environment preferred
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver quality camper-led programs under the supervision of the Camp Director(s), using an experiential model.
  • Ensure all programming is developmentally appropriate and engaging for your unit.
  • Participate in the opening and closing of camp, including cleaning, inventories and allstaff debriefs.
  • Attend all required trainings and meetings (on-site and off-site as necessary).
  • Demonstrate and promote courtesy, inclusivity, and professionalism with coworkers, caregivers, and campers.
  • Model professionalism at all times; including using camp resources wisely, being timely, and maintaining quality communication with camp staff, caregivers, and especially campers.
  • Maintain camper files and records in an organized and up-to-date manner in accordance with Council guidelines.
  • Become familiarized with individual campers’ needs including dietary restrictions, allergies, accommodations and preferences, while adhering to confidentiality and equity expectations
  • Provide occasional overnight supervision and programming for day campers during designated evenings.
