DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION: The Medical Intensive Care Unit is a 20-bed unit located at the 6th floor of the North Tower. Services are provided to critically ill adult patients with a minimum of 16 years of age. Patients in the unit require frequent and close assessment, skillful and timely clinical interventions and sophisticated technical support to achieve aggressive treatment goals. Majority of the patients within the unit have pulmonary diagnoses. Other common diagnoses are gastrointestinal bleeding, sepsis, neurologic events and diabetic ketoacidosis. Approximately half of the patients are direct admission from the Emergency Department. The other half are transfers from other units within the hospital and from other hospitals. The average age of the patient in the unit is 61 years old. SUMMARY: Under the direction and supervision of the Nurse Manager provides support for patients, visitors and colleagues on assigned nursing units. Facilitates efficient patient throughput including admissions, discharges and transfers. Supports patient experience and culture of safety goals through equipment maintenance, unit supplies, unit appearance and overall environment of care. Provides reception type services to patients, families, visitors and other unit guests.
