About The Position

We’re seeking an experienced Underwriting Consultant to join our Workplace Benefits Group Underwriting team. In this role, you’ll assess risk at both case and block levels, underwriting or reviewing standard to complex group insurance cases to develop strategies that drive profitable growth across markets or nationwide. You’ll also deliver rating and risk analysis, along with consultative support for prospects, new cases, amendments, and renewals. Provide technical training, coaching, review assistance and feedback for internal staff and external partners via live case analysis or quality review. Partner with local market sales personnel and relevant internal collaborators. Develop and support strategic business plans by serving as an internal and external advocate. This helps meet our business unit growth and profit goals. Analyze risk and develop rating strategies for employer groups or blocks of business by evaluating pricing tools, claims experience, demographics, market competitiveness, and regulatory requirements, ensuring alignment with internal goals. Provide consultative services to local sales personnel and external customers on rating options, contract terms, and benefit strategies, through discussions, presentations and conference calls. Effectively communicate and negotiate pricing recommendations, rational and impact. Review work performed by others (pre or post release) to authorize deviations from standards and provide recommendations for improvement. Provide appropriate motivation and coaching for learning and development of team members Collaborate with internal partners to assess customer needs and identify solutions to non-standard requests and problems. Solves moderately complex problems independently. Act as a business lead/subject matter expert for department and segment projects, owning necessary research, data analysis, and development of recommendations. Provide input on data needs going forward to validate the appropriate of the recommendation at a future date. Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required, along with 4+ years of underwriting experience and an advanced understanding of products within the business unit.
  • Must have excellent planning/organizational, problem-solving, time management, decision-making, analytical, and oral and written communication skills, as well as general math skills
  • Proven leadership, presentation and negotiation skills required
  • Computer skills and knowledge of business unit applications preferred
  • Must maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail while ensuring confidentiality
  • Travel required (5%), including overnight stays

  • Experience in Medium to Large Case Non-Medical Group Underwriting
  • Industry, market and competitor carrier knowledge required

  • Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.
