The student will work under the supervision of Argonne staff scientists, engineers, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students to integrate control of a spatial light modulator into the experimental control systems for our quantum simulation apparatus based on optical tweezer arrays of ytterbium atoms. The student will build the necessary optical, electronic, and software systems to precisely control patterns of light created by the modulator that will be applied to ultracold, trapped atoms. The student will then integrate these systems into an FPGA-based experimental control system and demonstrate low-delay control of applied light patterns in response to measurement outcomes. This work will greatly enhance the experimental capabilities of the quantum simulation apparatus by enabling loading of larger tweezer arrays, applications of arbitrary “Stark-shifting” light patterns for individual atom addressing, and higher fidelity atom-detection. We expect this work to result in several publications describing the experimental capabilities enabled by the integration of a spatial light modulator into our experimental apparatus. Education and Experience Requirements The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States. Applicants must be: o Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. o Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or o Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution. Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins. Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application. If accepting an offer, candidates may be required to complete pre-employment drug testing based on appointment length. All students remain subject to applicable drug testing policies.
