The Argonne 60m tower provides measurements at 10 and 60 meters that are critical to lab operations. The tower has not had a validation of measurements in more than 10 years. This study will evaluate the 10m boom by deploying a secondary 10m tower with accompanying equipment to validate current observations. The student will learn how to program data loggers to communicate with instruments and to create a data ingest feed back to the ANL-GCE server. Both of these skills are traditionally not taught in a classroom setting, and is key for developing a critical understanding of observational work. The 10m tower will initially be deployed near the 60m tower located at the Argonne Testbed for Multiscale Observational Science (ATMOS) site. The student will further gain experience by creating scripts to directly compare real time data from the 60m tower and the temporary tower. Once the student has mastered these skills, they will assist in additional projects related to machine learning, soil moisture, and other observational science onsite.
