I am requesting to host a summer intern primarily as an educational and workforce-development opportunity. The student will rotate across representative activities and, as appropriate, gain exposure to multiple projects and teams to learn how a national laboratory operates—e.g., how we plan computational and/or field experiments, document workflows, manage data, and communicate results. Within this training framework, my mentorship focus will be on building practical skills for modern Earth-system science: working effectively in a Linux/HPC environment, using supercomputing resources, becoming familiar with Earth system and regional modeling workflows, and processing large geospatial/climate datasets with reproducible methods. The goal is to help the student develop the habits of a motivated, independent scientist—problem formulation, responsible computing, effective and professional documentation and communication. Education and Experience Requirements The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States. Applicants must be: o Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. o Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or o Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution. Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins. Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application. If accepting an offer, candidates may be required to complete pre-employment drug testing based on appointment length. All students remain subject to applicable drug testing policies.
